Ecosystem

a group of living organisms and its physical environment and the relationships between them.

2 Major Components

Biotic Components

Abiotic Components

Biotic Components

are the plants (producers), animals (consumers) bacteria, and fungi (decomposers) that live in the ecosystem

Abiotic Components

having no life; lifeless part of an ecosystem such as soil, water, atmosphere, sunshine, nutrients

Community

a group of species that line in the same habitat and interact with each other.

Ecological niche

the function of an organism in an ecosystem

Food Chain

a diagram that shows the feeding relationships among a few organisms.

Food Chain

A path of energy and nutrients through a community

Producers

- 1st trophic level

- 1st link in the food chain

Kinds of Consumers

Herbivore

Carnivore

Omnivore

Decomposers

Herbivore

1st order consumer (2nd trophic level)

a consumer that eats only producers

Carnivore

2nd order consumer (3rd trophic level)

A consumer that eats only other consumers

Omnivore

3rd order consumer (4th trophic level)

A consumer that eats producers and other consumers.

Decomposers

4th order consumer (5th trophic level)

A consumer that puts materials from dead plants and animal back into soil, air, and water

Food Web

a combination of several interlocking food chains or pathways of energy

Food Pyramid

shows the energy transfer in the biosphere. There is a decrease in energy from one trophic level to the next because part of the food becomes the consumer's flesh, part is used by the consumers to perform their activities, and becomes transformed into heat which diffuses to the surrounding and becomes unavailable for further use.

Community Relationships

Mutualism

Competitioin

Commensalism

Parasitism

Predation

Symbiosis

means "living together"

Mutualism

a "give and take relationship"

Competition

This relationship occurs when two organisms fight for the same needs such as food, water, and other materials.

Commensalism

one organism is benefited and the other is unaffected.

Parasitism

occurs when one organism is benefited and the other is harmed

Predation

a kind of interaction where in an organism captures another organism for food.

Predator

an animal that kills animals and eats it

Prey

an animal that is killed and eaten
