Internal Working Model |
Affects later relationships, quality of attachment carries on. |
Youngblade and Belsky |
3-5 year olds who were securely attached were more curious, competent, self-confident and got along better with other children and were more likely to form strong friendships. |
Myron-Wilson and Smith |
Bullying behaviour could be predicted by attachment type. Secure - not involved Avoidant - victim Resistant - bully |
Hazan and Shaver |
Researched effect of early attachment on adult relationships. Printed a love quiz in local newspaper. Asked questions about attitudes towards love and relationships and childhood relationship with parents (attachment). 620 replies - 205 from men, 415 from women. Percentages roughly matched strange situation findings. Positive correlation between attachment type and relationship experiences. Evidence of continuity hypothesis. |
Secure |
56% - Likely to last twice as long. Mature and trusting. |
Avoidant |
25% - Mistrusting, lack intimacy. Shorter as end early because don't want to be broken up with. |
Resistant |
19% - Possessive and jealous, fear of rejection. Shorter as put off partners. |
Advantage: Evidence to support |
Kirkpatrick and Hazan found avoidant were more likely to have multiple partners. Link between attachment and partner choice is valid. |
Disadvantage: Fails to establish cause and effect |
Correlational studies reveal a relationship, not cause and effect. Could both be caused by other factors, e.g. innate temperament. Reduces validity. |
Disadvantage: Hazan and Shaver's research is retrospective |
Participants rely on memories, could be open to decay and distortion. Reduces validity, data may be unreliable. |
Disadvantage: Contradictory findings |
Zimmerman assessed attachment at 12 to 18 months and again at 16 years (using interviews). Early attachment isn't a good predictor of later relationships. Life events e.g. divorce have a greater impact. Reduces reliability of earlier findings, not consistent. |
