Syphilis

*Caused by bacteria; sexually transmitted


*Four stages:

Syphilis primary stage

*2-6 weeks


*Lesions appear at the site of infection

Syphilis secondary stage

*6-24 weeks after infection


*Bacteria replicates in the blood steam making symptoms more widespread


*Fatigue, malaise, fever, anorexia, sore throat, weight loss, rash

Syphilis latent stage

*Lesions of rash from secondary stage disappear


*6 months to year after infection


*Patients may be asymptomatic, but still infected, or may have relapses

Syphilis tertiary stage

*1-3 outbreaks that appear years to decades after infection.


*Damage to organs can cause tumors, weakening of arterial walls causing aneurysms, damage to aortic valves, heart failure, CNS(causing seizures, headache, change in mental status, cognitive impairment

Syphilis treatment

Penicillin (antibiotic)

Gonorrhea

*Second most common STI


*Bacteria that is sexually transmitted *Symptoms occur 2-14 days after infection

Gonorrhea Signs and symptoms

Purulent urethral discharge in males, purulent vaginal discharge in famales, frequency in urination, dysuria, burning, in females pelvic pain or abnormal vaginal bleeding

Gonorrhea treatment

IM dose of Cefriaxone (antibiotic)

Chlamydia

*most common STI in the US


*Bacteria that is sexually transmitted


*Symptoms appear 1-3 weeks after infection

Chlamydia Signs and symptoms

Most common are purulent discharge and painful urination

Chlamydia treatment

Antibiotics (most commonly azithromycin)

Herpes

*Caused by a virus,HSV 2 sexually transmitted


*HSV 1-80% of the population has "cold sores" effects the trigeminal ganglia and outbreaks occur in the oropharyngeal area


*HSV 2-"genetal herpes" effects the sacral ganglia


*May become latent, and reactivate due to stress, trauma, fever, or immunosuppression

Herpes signs and symptoms

Burning and itching to the area, development of ulcerative sores or lesions, fever, malaise, headache, fatigue.

Herpes treatment

Prevention and antivirals.


Viruses are not cured by antibiotics and will always remain latent in the host.
