How To Calculate Age

Year Months Days

14 10 7

- 14 1 3

---------------------------------

0yrs 9mo. 4 days

- Calculate age, and then mark on Denver Scale to perform assessment

Grasp Development

- Develops medial -> lateral

A. 0-3mo. = Palmar Grasp Reflex

B. 4-6mo. = Palmar Grasp

C. 5-6mo. = Ulnar Grasp; Raking

D. 7mo. = Radial Grasp

E. 10-11mo. = Inferior Pincer Grasp

F. 11-12mo. = Pad To Pad Pincer Grasp

G. 12mo. = Superior Pincer Grasp

T or F. When the newborn first starts to suck, there is negative air pressure to assist with consuming milk.

F. There is positive air pressure to begin with, and then later on the negative air pressure is seen. This is an indication that the newborn is starting to be able to regulate their sucking; usually occurs around 2-4mo.

Physiological Changes In The Infant

- Ht. increases by 50%

- By the end of 1st yr, baby's wt. is 3x as much

- Newborn - HR (120-140bpm)

BP (80/55)

- Infant - HR (80-100bpm)

BP (95-100/55)

Early Infancy Development

- 0 -> 3 mo.

1. Gross Motor

- Primitive reflexes present, such as the ATNR

- Extends heads in prone (1 mo.)

2. Fine Motor

- Palmar Grasp Reflex

3. Oral-Motor

- Suck-Swallow Reflex

4. Cognitive-Language

- Cries & Coos

5. Personal-Social

- Cries to communicate

- Calms to the human face and voice

- Newborn doesn't visually track across midline

- @ 3 mo. infant is able to track across midline

Middle Infancy Development

- 4 -> 6 mo.

1. Gross Motor

- Rolls from prone to supine, and vice versa

- Extends arms and weight bearing while in prone position (5 mo.)

- Sits propped

- Primitive reflexes should be integrated by 6 mo.

2. Fine Motor

- Palmar grasp develops, and then progressive into ulnar grasp

3. Oral-Motor

- 1st spoon feeding (Upper lip not active @ 4 mo.)

- Voluntary suck (negative air pressure increases in oral cavity)

4. Cognitive-Language

- Increased sound production

- Babbling

5. Personal-Social

- Early play

- Laughs and smiles

Late Infancy Development

- 7 -> 9 mo.

1. Gross Motor

- Sits independently

- Crawling progresses from belly to bear

- Creeps on hands and knees ("bear walk")

2. Fine Motor

- Radial Palmar Grasp

3. Oral-Motor

- Eats well with spoon

4. Cognitive-Language

- Concept of object permanence develops

5. Personal-Social

- Protests if caregiver leaves

- Becomes more of an emotional being; shows anger

Transitional Infancy Development

- 10 -> 12 mo.

1. Gross Motor

- Quadruped (9 - 10 mo.)

- Cruises with one hand (10 mo.)

- Standing (11 - 12 mo.)

- Walks independently (12 mo.)

2. Fine Motor

- Pincer grasp development (inferior -> pad to pad -> superior)

3. Oral-Motor

- Consumes solid foods with tongue lateralization

4. Cognitive-Language

- Development of 1st words

5. Personal-Social

- Development of stranger anxiety

Attachment

- Begins @ 2 - 3 mo.

- 4 - 6 mo. infant knows who parents are

- 6 - 7 mo. infant has clear attachment to caregiver

- After 12 mo. child can attach to multiple people
