centrally acting alpha 2 agonists

-selective stimulation of CNS alpha 2 receptors
-primary indication- hypertension (also used for pain and narcotic withdrawal)
-oral, transdermal patch, injection

adverse effects: drowsiness/sedation (up to 40%), rebound hypertension (abrupt withdrawal), xerostomia
