Which cell type mediates transplantation rejection?
T cells
What is an alloantigen?
Self antigen that is different in different individuals
ex: MHC molecules |
What is an alloreaction?
An immune response (reaction) to an alloantigen (MHC molecule)
What are the two different ways that alloantigens can be recognized by the immune system?
1. Directly - Host T cell recognizes unprocessed allogenic MHC molecules on graft APC
2. Indirectly - Host T cell recognizes processed peptide of allogenic MHC molecule bound to self MHC molecule on HOST APC |
What are the main antigens that induce acute rejection?
Major and Minor Histocompatability Complexes
What are the 3 types of graft rejection?
1. Hyperactute - preformed antibodies react with vascular endothelium of graft. Activate complement, trigger rapid necrosis
-Ex: Blood Typing mismatch 2. Acute Rejection - CD8+ CTL's react with alloantigens on graft endothelial cells. Results in "endotheliatis" 3. Chronic Rejection - T cells produce cytokines that induce proliferation of endothelial cells/smooth muscles. Causes graft arteriosclerosis. |
