Species

A group of organisms that can reproduce to profuce fertile offspring

Genus

A group of species that share similar features and a common ancestor

Features of animal kingdom:

-have a nucleus, no cell walls or chloroplasts

-feed on organic substances made by other living organisms

Features of the plant kingdom:

-have a nucleus and cell walls made of cellulose, often contain chloroplasts

- feed by photosynthesis

- may have roots, stems and leaves

Features of the fungi kingdom:

- main body is made up of hyphae

- usually multicellular, but some like yeast are unicellular

- have nuclei and cell walls, but the walls aren't made of cellulose

- do not have chlorophyll

- feed by digesting waste organic material and absorbing it into their cells

Features of the protoctist kingdom:

- they are multicellular or unicellular

- have a nucleus and may or may not have a cell wall and chloroplasts

- some feed by photosynthesis and some feed on organic substances made by other organisms

Features of the prokaryote kingdom:

- usually unicellular

- no nucleus

- have cell walls not made of cellulose

- no mitochondria

-have a circular loop of DNA, which is free in the cytoplasm

- often have plasmids

Common features of arthropods:

- jointed legs

- exoskeleton

- segmented body

Features of monocotyledons (monocots):

- have one cotyledon in their seeds

- their roots grow out directly from the stem

- their leaves have parallel veins

- have flower parts in multiples of three

- have vascular bundles in the stem, arranged randomly

Features of dicotyledons (dicots):

- have seeds with two cotyledons

- usually have a main root with side roots coming out from it

- leaves have a network of veins

- have flower parts in multiples of four or five

- have vascular bundles in the stem, arranged in a ring

cell membrane

a very thin, partially permeable layer surrounding the cytoplasm of every cell ; it controls what enters and leaves the cell

cell wall

a tough layer outside the cell membrane ; found in cells of plants, fungi and bacteri
