Mafic

Low viscosity, high temp, low gas (silica), non-explosive eruptions, high Mg & Fe, Shield/Cinder cone, Sills & dikes = intrusions

Intermediate composition

Normal silica (gas)/Mg/Fe levels, medium temp, normal viscosity, Cinder cone/composite cone, intrusions = volcanic necks (andesite)

Felsic composition

High silica, low Mg & Fe, low temp, high viscosity, Caldera, Batholiths & Laccoliths = intrusions

Vesicular texture of IG rocks

Rapid cooling, but where bubbles escape (porous basalt)

Pyroclastic texture of IG rocks

Angular rock fragments, cement between = volcanic ash

Detrital sedimentary rock texture

Form from deposition & lithification of sediments weathered from pre-existing rocks (clastic (broken) appearance

Chemical sedimentary rock texture

Form from chem. rxn in environment, or predominantly organic remains

Foliated metamorphic rock texture

Distinct layers of minerals

Relative dating

Rocks placed in correct sequence/order, doesn't tell age

Law of superposition

In undeformed sequence of SED rocks, each bed is older than the one above it
