What is the main event that is attributed to Mao Zedong's rise to power?
The Long March (October 1934) was forced as a retreat by Chiang Kai-Shek of the KMT (kuomintang), the rivaling party of Mao Zedong of the CPC (Communist Party)
What did Mao establish prior to the Long March and what were his forces known as?
The Soviet Republic of China was created, and his supporting military forces were known as the Red Army
What types of warfare did Mao utilize during the Long March?
Guerilla Warfare and Mobile Warfare (very similar to Guerilla, yet utilized by moving LARGE armies strategically in order to confuse the enemy, as opposed to the smaller bands utilized in guerilla warfare)
When was the second Sino-Japanese War, and what was its significance?
The second Sino-Japanese was a battle for territory in China between Chiang-Kai Shek and Mao Zedong from 1937-1949. Mao Zedong's forces were known as the "Peoples Liberation Army", and the war ultimately resulted in the CPC's domination over the KMT armies and a forced evacuation of Chiang.
What did the Communist Party become?
In 1949, the People's Republic of China (PRC), which also included the rising of the title of Chairman for Mao (Chairman Mao).
What was the Hundred Flowers campaign?
In 1957 Mao encouraged a "healthy" allotment of criticism, yet the criticism became very critical and Mao felt threatened. The result was an ending to the campaign, and a loss in rights granting freedom of speech about the government.
What was the Great Leap Forward?
The Great Leap Forward (1958) was the second five-year plan designed to change production towards manufacturing and shift from agriculture. Pig iron was also resmelted, yet proved wasteful. The result was that not enough food was harvested, resulting in the deaths of millions.
What was the Cultural Revolution?
In 1966, the Revolution was basically to help Mao back into power by bringing intellectuals into a massed army known as the Red Army which supported Mao. The underlying idea was a reform of policy in China, for Mao felt as though an old elite was merely replaced by a new elite in the post 1949 China.
