Patterson wanted to be a Sigma Pi because of his hero William Jennings Bryan being an alumni, mother wanted him close to home so he could not attend college with the literary society, contacted sigma pi in Canada to start a chapter in the states but they wanted to be an exclusively Canadian society, finally contacted Tau Phi Delta, made up lies that his fake Sigma Pi started at Williams & Mary College (1752) with permission from King George, he also stated that members of Phi Beta Kappa were Sigma Pi (SP initials on the key)-- eventually convince Tau Phi Delta to change name on Febuary 11, 1907. Contacted "Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities" stating all the aforementioned facts. Baird called it a ready made antiquity and when he pleaded with Baird he publicly ridiculed the fraternity. This upset the entire greek community. Patterson was finally expelled from the fraternity in 1909.
