TOPPING AND TAILING

EQUIPMENT FOR TOPPING AND TAILING


- Cotton wool balls


- Clean nappy


- Face cloth or sponge


- Towel


- Bowl of previously boiled water


STEPS IN TOPPING AND TAILING

1. Undress baby except vest and nappy


2. Clean baby's eyes using moistened cotton wool


3. Wash baby's hands and feet using facecloth


4. Remove nappy and cleanse area with lotion, water or baby wipes


5. Put on a clean nappy and redress


NAPPY CHANGING EQUIPMENT


- Nappy liners, pins, waterproof pants for reusable nappies


- Bucket for dirty, reusable nappies


- Nappy rash/barrier cream


- Baby wipes, cotton wool, tissues


- Bowl of warm water


- Clean nappies


NAPPY RASH


- Caused by prolonged contact between skin and urine and faeces


- Burning and irritation


- Skin becomes red and inflamed


FACTORS INCREASING NAPPY RASH


- Change of diet from breast to bottle


- Upset tummy causing diarrhoea


- teething


PREVENT NAPPY RASH


- Keep baby's skin dry


- Reusable nappies washed and rinsed thoroughly


- Use nappy rash cream


- Never leave baby in a wet nappy


CARE OF TEETH


- Care for the teeth from an early age


- As soon as teeth appear, they need to be cleaned


- Brush after breakfast and before going to bed

MEALS AND SNACKS


- Children need lots of calcium, phosphorous, vitamins A C and D


- Plenty of fruit and vegetables


- Avoid sweets and treats


- Don't give sweet drinks in baby bottles


- Make sure medicine is sugar free

DENTISTS


- Visits should start as soon as teeth come through


- Prevents fear


- Allows problems to be dealt with immediately

HAIR


- Wash hair/scalp daily


- Shampoos or lotions not necessary for the first few weeks


- When shampoos/lotions are used, they must be non-sting


- Use a small amount, lather, and rinse immediately

CRADLE CAP


- Common in small babies


- Scaly patches appear on the scalp


- Harmless


- Wash regularly and massage with baby oil

NAILS


- Nails should be kept short


- Cut using blunt edged scissors, when soft


- Usually after bathtime, but can be done while sleeping

TOILETRIES


- Do not use soaps or wipes for the first six weeks


- After six weeks, hypoallergenic toiletries should be used
