What is hydrocephalus

It is the dilatation of the ventricles due to blockage of CSF flow, increased production or due to decreased absorption of CSF

Clinical features

Large head often causing obstructed labor


raised head circumference greater than 2 cm per month and craniofacial disproportion


Bulging of anterior fontanelle, engorged scalp veins, scalp thin and shinning, suture line separation


Decreased upward gaze(sunsetting eyes)


Percussion cracked pot sound heard due to dilated ventricles(Macewen's sign)


Delayed milestones, mental retardation, difficulty feeding


Features of raised intracranial pressure, lethargy, irritability, ataxia,papilledema,respirstory failure
