- Americans finally outnumbered British and Gates engaged Burgoyne at Saratoga




- Burgoyne attempted retreat, was flanked by sniper, no reinforcements came, surrendered 5000 men to Gates - tremendous American victory

- Friend of Franklin who came from England and used literary skills to help patriot cause, said freedom was worth fighting for

- Winter quarters of Continental Army in PA and men looked to Washington for leadership




- Conway appointed inspector general for army and made sure troops didn't get rations, new enlistments, munitions, so army barely ate enough to survive





12 - GEORGE WASHINGTON

- Leader of the Continental Army, was attacked by Howe but escaped and moved men across Delaware River in fog




- Congress wanted him removed as general, yet he surprise attacked British and regained honor



12 - TRENTON

- Washington marched all night to Trenton with soldiers who had few weapons that could fire - Washington said to use bayonets




- Washington's army took Hessians by surprise, took 1000 prisoners and much needed supplies, which was first major victory of war for Americans




-Gave courage, hope, and morale - Washington was hailed as a hero

1. Isolate and cut off New England colonies from the rest




2. Recruit Loyalists in the South to discourage colonists




3. Keep middle colonies stranded to keep them from support and defeat Virginia
