This man advocated for circumcision for men as adults. He also attempted to make the genitals a very painful area so people would not want to touch them. Thought a bland diet would stop people from wanting to have sex.
Dr Kellogg
Think of the cereal.
What is glove anaethesia and who does this theory belong to?
Women feeling guilty for masturbation - paralysis of the hand. Conversion disorder. Freud's theory.
Labeled as a pervert. Paralysis.
Why was Kinsey labeled as a pervert?
Interviewed people willing to talk about sex, wrote books on it in the 40s and 50s. Interviewed people like paedophiles and attempted to understand their sexual urges.
Time period relevance.
From an evolutionary perspective, what counts as cheating?
Only intercourse. Other kinds are considered emotional cheating.
What is the problem with measuring sex drive as how many times per unit time someone has sex?
a) Someone may not be able to find people to have sex with, and therefore this would not be an accurate representation of sex drive
b) relationships are a compromise, men get less sex than they want and women get more.
What is Kinsey's measure of sex drive?
Behavioural, independent of partners. Total sexual outlet, number of orgasms per unit time.
What is the total sexual outlet, as described by Kinsey?
Total number of orgasms per unit time.
Orgasms
Why was Kinsey's measure of sex drive problematic?
It was a good measure for men, however women don't always orgasm when they take part in sexual activity - therefore it can miss sexual activity and underestimate.
Orgasms, gender difference
Sexual Desire Inventory is...
an attitudinal measure, having two subscales: the dyadic scale and the solitary scale.
Sex drive... scales.
What is the difference between the two scales in the Sexual Desire Inventory?
Dyadic - Sex between two people
Solitary - Masturbation
Two versus one
What is the scale that attempts to address the pros and cons of other sex drive measurement scales?
TSO-plus (SDQ)
isn't this ostovich's scale :v
What are the correlates between gender in terms of sex drive?
No matter the scale, men always seem to have a higher sex drive than women (although people think this could be wrong)
Horny boiz
Why might a male benefit from having a higher sex drive (from an evolutionary perspective)?
Men would benefit because they'd get more women pregnant, they would spread their genes more. they must be able to perform and therefore have a higher sex drive.
Genes
Why might a female NOT benefit from having a high sex drive?
If they had a high sex drive, it would increase the chance of getting pregnant with low quality offspring.
Parasites
Define 'sociosexual orientation'
Willingness to engage in casual sex
hook upz
What is the difference between men and women in terms of sociosexual orientation?
Men have an unrestricted sociosexual oritentation than women, they are more likely to engage in casual sex.
c'mon bby i bought u flowers
What kind of correlation is their between sociosexual orientation and sex drive?
A very strong one (0.4-0.6) - the higher your sex drive, the more you are willing to engage in casual sex. Doesn't necessarily mean intercourse btw.
i got u dat nice ring bby c'mon
How is sex drive correlated with number of life-time partners?
Indirectly related - The higher the sex drive, the more partners you have had during your lifetime. Involves control of sociosexual orientation.
What is the correlation between frequency of sex and sex drive?
Positive correlation - however depends on if someone is available to have sex with.
How does timing of puberty affect sex drive?
Men - The earlier puberty, the higher sex drive.
Women - no correlation (or so we think, maybe the measurement was unfortunate)
What does timing of first experience and sexual arousal have to do with sex drive? What is the problem with this research?
The earlier the person experienced sexual arousal, the higher the sex drive. However this is retrospective research. Seen in both men and women.
What is the correlation between sexual orientation and sex drive?
Having a higher sex drive is associated with having same sex sexual interests.
What is a theory to explain the correlation seen between sexual orientation and sex drive?
Earlier onset of puberty and first sexual arousal is usually a predictor of sexual orientation.
Puberty in Les/Bi women: 11.4
Sexual Arousal: 11
Puberty in Het women: 12
Sexual arousal: 12.8
The movement of the 1960s-80s that increased the acceptance of sexual activity outside of heterosexual marriages (among other liberations) was...
The sexual revolution
What are the three main points to Baumeister's hypothesis of erotic plasticity?
Intraindividual variability
Responses to sociocultural factors
Attitude-behaviour consistency
think of gender differences etc :v
When Kinsey et al (1953) investigated gender differences in the total sexual outlet over time, what did he find? What part of Bauemeister's hypothesis would this fit under?
Males stay relatively constant, however females can go long periods without sexual activity and suddenly want a lot.
Intraindividual Variability
Changing over time...
Adams & Turner (1985) asked adults aged 65-80 to report their current masturbatory frequency vs the frequency with which they masturbated in their 20s. What did they find? What part of Bauemeister's hypothesis would this fit under?
Women's frequency increased over time while men's remained relatively constant.
Intraindividual Variability
These people were probably born before the sexual revolution...
What is intraindividual variability?
Changing how they express their sexuality over time, generations, cultures etc.
Ard (1977) asked couples who had been married for at least 20 years to report how much they felt their partners sexual attitudes had changed during the course of their marriage. What did he find? What part of Baumeister's hypothesis would this be in?
Women changed more than men in their approach to sexuality where only 6% of wives said that their husbands changed.
Intraindividual variability.
Is there a gender difference between men and women when it comes to the Kinsey scale? If there is, what is it?
Men are usually 6s or 0s on the scale - usually men claim that they are completely straight or completely gay. A lower percentage of women claim to be a 0 – women are spread all across the scale and suggests a more plastic approach.
When looking at same-sex prisons, what do we find?
Women in prison are far more likely than are men to have consensual sexual relationships. We find that about half of women, or only about a third of men have consensual sexual relationships in prison.
Laumann et al (1994) looked at cross-sectional data in attitudes towards sex pre and post sexual revolution. What did he find and what part of Baumeister's theory would this be?
Men had 11% difference post-sexual revolution where as women had 20% difference increase post revolution. We see a larger response by women to attitudes about sex.
How do religion and education affect attitudes about sex?
Men – Higher educated men performed more oral sex. Women – Higher educated women performed more oral sex, but lesser educated women performed less oral sex than lesser educated men as well. It is affecting women’s sexuality MORE than men’s.
What is difficult about predicting sexual behaviours according to their attitudes in women?
Women respond more to the situation, makes it difficult to predict. Example - condom use.
Do we see erotic plasticity in non-human animals? Explain an experiment that tests this.
Male and female goats raised by sheep, and later are put back with their own species. Male goats won't mate with goats - they want sheep. However females are perfectly happy to mate with either or. Shows more plasticity.
Goats and sheep
What is the feminist explanation for differences in men and women sexual attitudes and behaviours?
Male power leads to female submissiveness. They respond in a sensible manner to men.
