What does the HPV vaccine contain?

VLPs (virus-like particles) that are composed of the major capsid protein L1. This is both a subunit and recombinant vaccine.

How many HPV types do the 2 vaccine protect against?
|
One protects against 2 of the 4 major HPVs associated with cervical cancer and the other protects against all 4 of the major HPVs.

What is the time-line of HPV vaccination?
|
It is a 3 dose series given at 11-12 years old. It is given at 0, 1-2 and 6 months. It is recommended that boys up to 21 years old and women up to 26 years old who have not been vaccinated receive this vaccination. It is optional for men between 21-26. The efficacy of the vaccine approaches 100%.
