Hemophilia

inability to control blood clotting.
X-linked recessive. Much more common in males than females |

Inability to distinguish certain colors.
X-linked recessive. Much more common in males than females |

Tay-Sachs disease
Lipid accumulation in brain; mental retardation; blindness; death in early childhood.
Autosomal recessive |
Sickle-cell disease
Misshapen red blood cells; damage to many tissues
Co-dominant alleles |
Down syndrome
Mental retardation; increased susceptibility to many diseases; high frequency of birth defects
Caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 ("trisomy 21") |
Cystic fibrosis
Excess mucus in lungs, liver, digestive tract. Increased susceptibility to infections
Autosomal recessive |

Turner syndrome
sterile females with only one copy of the X chromosome; no sexual development at puberty
Caused by nondisjunction of the X chromosome (karyotype 45,X) |
