Stages of Group Development

Group Structure

Role- behavior patterns expected ofsomeone occupying a given position in a social unit. Norms- standards or expectations thatare accepted and shared by a group’s members. Groupthink- when a group exerts extensivepressure on an individual to align his or her opinion with that of others.


Status- a prestige grading, position, orrank within a group.


Socialloafing - the tendency for individuals to expend less effort when workingcollectively than when working individually.


Groupcohesiveness - the degree to which groupmembers are attracted to one another and share the group’s goals.

Types of Work Teams

Problem-solvingteam - a team from the same department or functional area that’s involved inefforts to improve work activities or to solve specific problems.


Self-managedwork team - a type of work team that operates without a manager and is responsiblefor a complete work process or segment.


Cross-functionalteam - a work team composed ofindividuals from various functional specialties.


Virtualteam - a type of work team that uses technology to link physically dispersedmembers in order to achieve a common goal.
