Domino Theory

It was believed/known that if one country fell to communism, any leaning/depending on it in any way, shape or form would follow suit and thus collapse any sort of system put in place.

New Deal Program

Franklin D Roosevelt's main goal was the create the 'New Deal', a series of programs, groups, organizations and more associated with recovering America from its Depression. The three goals were to bring Relief, immediate help for the needy, Recovery, building up the economy again, and Reform, which would change the way the banks worked.

Carpet Baggers

A carpet-bagger was a Northerner who would move to the South during the reconstruction era [after the civil war]. They headed to the southern states, driven by hopes of economic gain, a desire to work on behalf of the newly emancipated slaves or a combination of both.

Share Croppers

Sharecropping is a system where the landlord/planter allows a tenant to use the land in exchange for a share of the crop

Robber Barons

A term derived in the 19th century, this referred to American businessmen, politicians, government officials and more who use unfair and/or illegal methods to become rich.

Great White Fleet

The nickname given to the United States Navy Fleet, they completed a journey around the globe, authorized by Theodore Roosevelt, from December 16th, 1907 to February 22nd, 1909.

Truman Doctrine

Created by President Harry S Truman March 12, 1947, further developed on July 12th, 1948 established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces

Monroe Doctrine

The Monroe Doctrine is one of the best-known U.S. policies toward the Western Hemisphere. Delivered to Congress by President James Monroe in December 1823, the doctrine warns European nations that the United States would not tolerate further colonization or puppet monarchs

Fat Man and Little Boy

Little Boy was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and Fat Man was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, they were the first and second nuclear weapons used in a war and caused for a fast surrender from Japan.

"separate but equal" - state and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States, 1870s-1950s, stemming from 'Jim Crow', a derogatory term for African-Americans

What effect did the New Deal have in the United States?

While in the end, it did not work out as wish, Roosevelt's policies and programs did create a wave of change and brought many jobs and safer money investments, helping families recover and reform from the Great Depression.

Why was share-cropping so popular?

After the Civil War, former slaves were struggling to find jobs and any form of place to stay, as there was still much prejudice against the black community and not much money to go around.




Former slaveowners, who were finding it difficult to find people to work their land, decided to divide their plantations into sections and allow people/families to own and live and work that land, for very specific conditions

In the rise of British, Russian, and Japanese navies, it was a show of arms to prove that America also had a strong military force, and had a potential to overpowering the other nations. Instead of picking battles, United States went with silent intimidation and used that as one of the first examples of military prowess within their independent nation.

What was the significance of the Domino Theory?

Communism was a huge threat, as situations the Cold War and Vietnam War were both going on and putting both the Western and Asian-based world at high risk. The Vietnam War stemmed from France and America working to stop the entirety of the country Vietnam from being taken over by Communism, which would have brought Laos, Cambodia, and several other large, developing Asian countries down with it and caused a huge disadvantage to the capitalist countries.

Instead of immediately enacting a war, or any form of conflict, Truman decided to simply extend the US's policies to include any free independent nations, stating that they would come to their aid if something were to happen. This is considered the first steps of the cold war.
