Three-Fifths Compromise
The South wanted to count slaves as people to get more representatives, but the North didn’t want to count them because they weren’t citizens. They compromised, and counted them as 3/5 of a person for the census. The compromise was proposed by Sherman at Philadelphia Convention.
Dred-Scott Decision
Slave Dred Scott sued for his freedom. Originally lived in MO, moved to IL and WI for five years, and then back to MO. Supreme Court said that he did not have the write to sue, that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and that Scott was not free. It signified US was Slave States of America.
Federalist Party
Loose Interp of Constitution (things were implied, First Bank of US)
Strong Central Gov’t (Whiskey Tax, 25% tax on whiskey), Majority Rule (Alien and Sedition Acts)
First Republican Party
Formed when one party could no longer share similar views.
Loose interpretation of the Constitution (second Bank of America)
Strong Federal government (Tariff of 1816, caused industry in northern colonies—self sufficiency)
Majority Rule (3/5 Compromise, Missouri Compromise (know what they are)
Indian Removal
The five civilized tribes who were literate and well educated were forced from their territory by Andrew Jackson.
Took the “Trail of Tears” west to Oklahoma where thousands died.
Supreme Court said they couldn’t be moved, but they could not stop Jackson.
Sioux Wars
Gold was discovered in and around the Black Hills of South Daokta. Whites did not respect reservation boundaries. The Sioux became angry and attacked, and the US Army was involved.
Sioux led by Crazy Horse, US by General Custer.
Custer’s Regiment killed at Custer’s last stand at Pine Ridge.
Nez Perce War, fought in Idaho—Chief Joseph “I will fight no more, forever.” Ended Indian Wars.
Benjamin Harrison
Under Harrison, Congress spent a billion dollars for the first time in history. The McKinley Tariff Act, sponsored by William McKinley boosted tariffs to an average of 48.4 percent on dutied goods. Farmers were forced to purchase high-priced manufactured goods from America, but sold into world markets. Republicans lost seats in Congress.
Calvin Coolidge
Promoter of business, not farms. The McNary-Haugen Bill was to keep agricultural prices high by letting the government buy surpluses and sell them abroad. Congress passed twice, but Coolidge vetoed twice. Farm prices ended up staying low.
WWI
Conflict started between imperialism and nationalism (Slavs wanted out of A/H (nationalist))
Parade in Sarajevo (Bosnia) in honor of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, successor to the A/H throne in 1914. The terrorist group “Black Hand” assassinated him.
A/H declared war because they were not allowed to investigate.
Germany and O/T allied with A/H, Russia, England and France with Serbia.
US Not involved because of Monroe Doctrine, but had to enter because of unrestricted submarine warfare (Lucitania, IDEOLOGICAL), loaning money to British and French (ECONOMIC), and the Zimmerman Note, which threatened invasion of the United States. War declared in 1917 by Wilson. The war ended near the end of 1918, A/H lost.
WWII
Started with Germany furious over war reparations from WWI. After Japan went to war with China and Germany invaded Poland, AND France and Britain entered, the US remained out of conflict. The US gave aid to the Allied powers and embargoed Japan, who bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. After the United States joined the Allied power and stopped Hitler and Mussolini, the war was over.
