What does Kennedy do after the quarantine is put in place around Cuba?

The quarantine was put in place on the 21st of October, and on the 25th of October, Kennedy writes Khrushchev a letter that lays the blame for the crisis in the hands of the USSR. Between Kennedy and the National Security Council, they discuss a proposal to offer a deal to the USSR - no missiles in Cuba in return for taking US missiles out of Turkey.

How does Khrushchev respond to this?

Khrushchev sends his first letter on the 26th of October, which proposes a halt to the building of missile sites in Cuba, in return for lifting the blockade, and a public guarantee that the US will never invade Cuba.

What two events happened on the 27th of October?

A second letter from Khrushchev is received by Kennedy, which is demanding the removal of missile bases in Turkey. A US U2 spy plane was also shot down over Cuba.

How did Kennedy respond to these two events?

Kennedy ignored Khrushchev's second letter, and replied to his first letter; he offers to lift the blockade and publicly promise not to invade Cuba, in return for Khrushchev dismantling the missile bases in Cuba. In addition to this, Kennedy would dismantle the missile bases in Turkey, as long as this is kept a secret.




Khrushchev agrees to this on the 28th of October, and on the 20th of November, Russian bombers leave Cuba, and Kennedy lifts the blockade.

How did the Cuban missile crisis affect the Cold war?

+A permanent hotline phone link was set up between the White house and the Kremlin, which would ensure both sides could discuss issues before they escalated.
