CORE set up.
1948
Truman bans segregation in the Armed Forces.
1954
Brown vs. Topeka [Board of Education]. This case eventually resulted in segregation of schools being illegal.
1955
Montgomery Bus Boycott: Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat. Martin Luther King became involved in peaceful protest.
1957
1) Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) set up with MLK as its leader.
2) Little Rock: The Central High School used state troopers to prevent black students entering, as he 'feared for their safety'. Eisenhower intervened and sent in armed guards to protect the black students. This was a key development as the President became directly involved.
1961
The Freedom Rides, organised by Congress Of Racial Equality (CORE).
1962
James Meredith was refused entry to the University of Mississippi. Kennedy intervened and Meredith eventually entered the university with armed guards to protect him.
1963
1) The Birmingham Campaign: MLK organised a series of marches and was arrested. During this time he wrote his 'letter from Birmingham jail' to Kennedy, who organised his release. Many of the protestors were being shown on television being attacked by police dogs. This increased public support. The trouble in Birmingham caused some people to believe that MLK's tactics weren't working and the Black Power Movement emerged. Its most notable member was Malcolm X.
2) March on Washington - 'I have a dream' speech.
1964
1) Civil Rights Act
2) Malcolm X assassinated.

Voting Rights Act
1968
Martin Luther King assassinated.
