A convention held in Philadelphia to discuss how the new government should be structured, if at all

Northwest Ordinance

A law set to regulate how the western lands would be governed which was that the region would be divided into 3-5 territories. Once a territory reached 5,000 free adult men, the territory could elect a legislature. Once the territory reached 60,000 free inhabitants, the territory could write their own constitution and form their own government, with the approval of the congress and then become a state.

interstate commerce

due to foreign trade troubles, states began trading with each other which led to separate country like treatment between the states

tariffs

due to the separate country treatment, states began imposing tariffs which were taxes put on goods importation

Economic Depression

due to America's foreign trade in-capabilities, weak currency and high debt the country went into an economic depression, a widespread and spreading discontent

The Great Compromise

debates about the representation of congress grew so difficult that Roger Sherman came up with a plan to please everyone, there would be a bicameral legislature and the senate have equal representation and the House of representatives would have representation based on their population

electoral college

the way in which president and vice president would be elected. electors from each state would cast votes, and each state would have as many electors as representatives and senators that they sent to congress
