Juan de Onate

A Spaniard who explored the upper Rio Grande and founded the town of Santa Fe.

El Pope

A Pueblo religious leader, he led the 1680 revolt that killed 400 Spaniards and drove 2,000 whites out of New Mexico.

Benjamin Franklin

A multi-talented author, inventor, statesman, and diplomat, this Philadelphia resident was a national celebrity., perhaps America's first, by 1740, largely through his "Poor Richard's Almanac." He played key roles in writing the Declaration of Independence and persuading France to support the American Revolution.

Pedro Mendez de Aviles

Spanish admiral who founded St. Augustine, FL, in 1565, he became the first governor of Florida and authorized the slaughter of French Huguenots at Fort Caroline.

George Whitefield

And itinerant Anglican preacher, he rose to prominence by delivering fiery sermons as he toured the colonies in the 1730s and 1740s.

George Washington

Commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and first president of the United States, he first came to public attention as a young officer in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War.

William Pitt

An influential minister under King George II, he persuaded England to conduct much of the Seven Years' War against France in America rather than Europe.

James Wolfe

An English Military officer during the Seven Years War, he led the decisive assault on Quebec in 1759, dying in the course of the victory.

Marquis de Montcalm

Commander of French forces in North America during the Seven Years' War, he was killed during the English conquest of Quebec in 1759.

Albany Plan

Plan of intercolonial cooperation proposed by prominent colonists including Benjamin Franklin at a conference in Albany, New York, in 1754. The plan called for a Grand Council of elected delegates from the colonies that would have powers to tax and provide for the common defense. Although rejected by the colonial and British governments, it was a prototype for colonial union.

Backcountry

In the 18th century, the edge of settlement extending from western Pennsylvania to Georgia. This region formed the second frontier as settlers moved west from the Atlantic coast into the interior.

Consumer Revolution

Period between 1740 and 1770 when English exports to the American colonies increased by 360% to satisfy Americans' demand for consumer goods.

Enlightenment

Philosophical and intellectual movement that began in Europe during the 18th century. It stressed the use of reason to solve social and scientific problems.

Great Awakening

A sudden, spontaneous, and fervent series of Protestant evangelical revivals beginning in the 1730s and through the 1740s and 1750s that occurred throughout the colonies. The Great Awakening encouraged men and women to take an active role in their salvation and helped connect scattered colonists together with a unifying belief that, with God's assistance, social and political progress was possible in colonial America.

Itinerant Preachers

These charismatic preachers spread revivalism throughout America during the Great Awakening.

Middle Ground

A geographical area where two distinct cultures meet and merge with neither holding a clear upper hand.

Peace of Paris of 1763

Treaty ending the French and Indian War by which France ceded Canada to Britain.

Seven Years' War

Worldwide conflict (1756-1763) that pitted Britain against France. With help from the American colonists, the British won the war and eliminiatedFrance as a power on the North American Continent. Also known as the French and Indian War.
