King would ask his ancestors a question
Medicine man would interpret crack in the bone, intepret it and write question on it
Important b/c it is the first examples of the written language
Some of the symbols are still being used today
Means its the oldest written language
Daoism
Created in the WSP to bring back order in soceity
Wanted a solution to all the warfare and death
Best to turn away from power struggle b/c all of it was man made
Once free from the conventions, society would fall into place
Believed in relativity, passivity and emptiness.
Filial Peity
Practice of worshipping ancestors
Women were responsible for carrying on this tradition
One wife was responsbile for carryting it on and making sure it was done properly
Sinification
Buddhism went through this when it entered China, it became more Chinese
Chinese would not accept religion b.c it was forgiegn
Some of the practices changed like living in the monestary and the practice of cremation
Texts also went through sinification when they wee translated into Chinese
Mandate of Heaven
Used to determine if a ruler should still have the throne
Claimed political legitimacy
If a ruler claimed he had the mandate and everythign went well, he reamined ruler
If disastwrs occured, he would lose it b/c Heaven was no longer happy
Practice used when China was under the rule of 1 leader
Mencius
Conufcian thinking born about 100 years about Confucian
Wrote at least one chapter in the Analects
Added ideas about the human nature, believed men were by nature good
Believed the innate goodness could be developed only by an education
The king had duty to provide all with education and right to live
If he didn't, the mandate was at stake
Concubine
Practice of taking a woman into the home only to produce children
She was not technically a wife, she didn't perofrm rituals, only there to have kids
Didn't matter who the mother's ancestors were
Need for sons was important to carry on father's name
