Obturator Externus

ORIGIN: outer border of the obturator membrane and associated bony borders
INSERTION: trochanteric fossa of the femur
INNERVATION: obturator nerve (L3-L4)
ACTION: hip joint - ext rotation, adduction

stabilization of pelvis in sagittal plane

Gluteus Maximus

ORIGIN: Sacrum (dorsal surface, lateral side), Ilium (gluteal surface, posterior side), sacrotuberous ligament, thoracolumbar fascia

INSERTION: upper fibers - IT band (iliotibial tract); lower fibers - gluteal tuberosity
INNERVATION: Inferior gluteal n (L5-S2)
ACTION: whole muscle - extension of hip, ext rotation of hip; upper fibers - abduction; lower fibers - adduction

Tensor Fascia Lata

ORIGIN: Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)

INSERTION: IT band (iliotibial tract)
INNERVATION: Superior gluteal n (L4-S1)

ACTION: tenses the fascia lata

hip joint - int rotation, flexion, abduction

Gluteus Medius

ORIGIN: Ilium (gluteal surface below the iliac crest and b/t the ant and post gluteal lines)
INSERTION: lateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
INNERVATION: superior gluteal n (L4-S1)

ACTION: whole muscle - abducts and stabilizes (in the coronal/frontal plane) the hip; Ant part - int rotation and flexion of hip; post part - ext rotation and extension of hip

Quadratus Femoris

ORIGIN: lateral border of the ischial tuberosity

INSERTION: intertrochanteric crest of the femur

INNERVATION: direct branches from the sacral plexus (L5-S1)
ACTION: ext rotation and adduction of the hip

Gluteus Minimus

ORIGIN: Ilium (gluteal surface below the origin of the glut med)

INSERTION: anterolateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur

INNERVATION: Superior gluteal n (L4-S1)

ACTION: Whole muscle - abduction and stabilization (coronal/frontal plane) of hip; ant part - int rotation and flexion of hip; post part - ext rotation and extension of hip

Obturator Internus

ORIGIN: inner border of the obturator membrane and associated bony borders

INSERTION: medial surface of greater trochanter of the femur

INNERVATION: direct branches from sacral plexus (L5-S1)

ACTION: hip - ext rotation, adduction, extension of the hip (sometimes abduction depending on position of hip)

Superior Gemelli

ORIGIN: Ischial spine

INSERTION: medial surface of the greater trochanter of the femur

INNERVATION: direct branches from the sacral plexus (L5-S1)

ACTION: hip joint - ext rotation, adduction, extension (can do abduction depending on position of the hip)

Inferior Gemelli

ORIGIN: Ischial tuberosity
INSERTION: medial surface of greater trochanter of the femur
INNERVATION: direct branches from the sacral plexus (L5-S1)

ACTION: hip joint - ext rotation, adduction, extension (also abduction depending on position of the hip)

Piriformis

ORIGIN: pelvic surface of the sacrum
INSERTION: apex of the greater trochanter of the femur
INNERVATION: direct branches of the sacral plexus (S1-S2)
ACTION: hip joint - ext rotation, abduction, extension, stabilization
