State two types of seismic wave.

P-waves

S-waves

Why is knowledge of seismic waves useful?

Knowledge of how seismic waves travel through the Earth provides us with evidence of the Earth’s structure.

How do P and S waves travel through the Earth?

P-waves travel through solids and liquids, so they can travel through all of the Earth’s layers.

S-waves cannot travel through liquid rock, so they cannot travel through the outer core.

How does the speed and direction of P and S waves change as they travel through the Earth?

The speed of P-waves and S-waves increases as they travel deeper into the mantle.

They travel through the Earth in curved paths, but they change direction suddenly when they pass through the boundary between substances in different states.

Which of the following statements about S waves is correct?

They are longitudinal

They travel through solids but not liquids

They travel through solids and liquids

They travel through solids but not liquids

Which of the following statements about p waves is correct?

They are transverse

They travel more slowly than s waves

They travel through solids and liquids

They travel through solids and liquids

Which type of seismic wave travels the fastest?

They travel at the same speed

S waves

P waves

P waves

Seismic waves can be used to analyse the Earth's structure. Which of the following statements is correct?

S waves travel through all the layers of the Earth

S waves can travel through the outer core but not through the mantle

S waves can travel through the mantle but not through the outer core

S waves can travel through the mantle but not through the outer core

What is a seismometer?

How do we use them?

Earthquakes are detected using a seismometer – a piece of equipment that picks up the vibrations in the earth.

We can work out the location of an earthquake by calculating the time difference between the arrival of the S and P waves. Information from three different seismometers is compared to work out the exact location of the earthquake – the epicentre.

What is the process called that is used to locate the epicentre of an earthquake?

Triangulation
