Epidermis
The outermost layer of skin. Made up of 5 smaller layers but has no blood vessels or blood cells.
2 main layers of the epidermis.
Stratum Corneum- outermost layer. Stratum germinativum- innermost layer. Cells of the Stratum corneum are constantly shed and replaced by new cells from the Stratum Germinativum.
Dermis
Corium, or true skin. Contaims blood vessels, lymph nodes, nerves, involuntary muscle, sweat and oil glands, and hair follicles. Top of dermis is covered with papillae, which fit into ridges on the stratum germinativum. (finger prints)
Subcutaneous fascia or hypodermis
innermost layer. Made of elastic and fibrous connective tissue and adipose (fatty) tissue. Connects skin to underlying muscles.
Sweat glands
sudoriferous glands.
Apocrine Glands
sweat glands that produce unpleasant odor. Become active during puberty. Located in armpit and genital region. Odor produced when bacteria break down.
Eccrine Glands
Sweat glands in the rest of body. 3,000 of these in 1/4 in. of your palm. Triggered by the sympathetic nervous system. Responds to anxiety.
Sebacious Glands
oil glands that usually open into hair follicles. Produce sebum, which keeps sking and hair from becoming dry and brittle.

Protection; barrier to sun's UV rays and pathogens.

Sensory Perception; Help body respond to pain, pressure, temp and touch sensation.

Body Temp regulation; blood vessels dilate and contract to hold in body heat and to let body heat out.

Storage; Tissues for temp storage of fat, glucose, water, vitamins and salt.

Absorption; of certain medicines

Excretion; salt.

Production; of vitamin D by using UV rays from the sun.
Color disorders
Albino; loss of skin pigment.

Erythema; redness. (sunburn or blushing)

Jaundice; yellowing.

Cyanosis; blue (lack of oxygen)
Macules
Flash spots, such as freckles.
Papules
Firm, raised areas such as pimples.
Vesicles
Blisters or fluid filled sacks.
Pustules
pus filled sacks- pimples.
Crusts
Areas of dried pus and blood
Wheals
itchy, elevated areas, with an irregular shape. Hives.
Ulcer
Deep loss of skin surface that may extend into the dermis.
Athletes foot
Fungal infection of the feet. Contageous.
Eczema
Non contageous, inflammatory disorder caused by an allergen or irritant.

highly contagious skin infection
Psoriasis
chronic, non contagious, inherited skin disorder. Scales.
Ringworm
Highly contagious infection of the skin or scalp.
