When does altitude or mountain sickness develop?
Individuals who travel to extraordinary heights(multiple atmospheres) become ill app. 8-24 hours after.
What are some symptoms?
Headache/irritability/insomnia/breathlessness/nausea and vomiting. These symptoms may e associated with cerebral edema.
The low PO2 at high altitude causes arteriolar dilation. TRUE/FALSE
TRUE. If cerebral autoregulation does not compensate there is an increaqse in capillary pressure that favors increased transudation of fluid into brain tissue.
What is high altitude pulmonary edema?
It is a patchy edema of the lungs that is related to the marked pulmonary hypertension that develops at high altitude.
How are forms of high altitude illness treated?
Descent to lower altitudes, and by tratment with thediuretic acetazolamide. This drug inhibits carbonic anhydrase, producing increased HCO3 excretion in the urine, stimulating respiration, increasing PaCO2 and reducing the formation of CSF. Glucocorticoids may be occasionally employed.
Treatment with pulmonary edema, prompt treatment with O2 is essential and use of a hyperbaric chamber. TRUE/FALSE
TRUE. Nifedipine, a Ca+ channel blocker that lowers pulmonary artery pressure, is also useful.
