Joseph Campbel

He was the first person to write about the Hero’s Journey in his bookThe Hero With a Thousand Faces. He discovered many common patterns running through hero myths and stories from around the world.

Monomyth

1 Myth- Another word for the Hero's Journey

Step 1: The Ordinary World

The hero’s normal world before the story begins.

Step 2: Call to Adventure

The hero is presented with a problem, challenge, or adventure to undertake.

Step 3: Refusal of the Call

The hero refuses the challenge or journey, usually out of fear.

Step 4: Meeting with the mentor

The hero meets a mentor to gain confidence, advice, or training to face the adventure.

Step 5: Crossing the first threshold

The hero crosses the gateway that separates the ordinary world from the special world .

Step 6: Tests, Allies, Enemies

The hero faces tests, meets allies, confronts enemies, and learns the rules of the Special World.

Step 7: Approach

The hero has hit setbacks during tests and may need to reorganize his helpers or rekindle morale with mentors.

Step 8: The Supreme Ordeal

The biggest life or death crisis. The hero faces his greatest fear and only through this scary experience can the hero be “reborn” experiencing even greater powers to see the journey to the end.

Step 9: The Reward

The hero has survived death, overcome his greatest fear, and now earns the reward he sought.

Step 10: The Road Back

The hero must recommit to completing the journey and travel the road back to the Ordinary World. New challenges often arise.

Step 11: Resurrection

The hero faces a final test where everything is at stake and he must use everything he has learned on his journey. Sometimes the hero will look as if he/she is dying, but will live at the end.

Step 12: Return with the Elixer

The hero returns home from the journey with “some element of treasure” that has the power to change others as the hero has been changed.
