Who was the Earl of Warwick?

Nephew of Edward VI. He was placed in the Tower of London, where he remained with the exception of public appearances.



He was a threat to the throne as he had more of a claim than henry.



Alleged to have plotted against Henry in 1499 with Perkin Warbeck and was beheaded.

How did he consolidate his power?

1. Dated his reign a day before the Battle of Bosworth* on 21st August 1485.


This made all the Yorkists on Richard III's side traitors, allowing Henry to take land from them and eliminate their threat.



*Battle of Bosworth was where Henry gained the throne defeating the previous King. Henry had been brought up in France as a fugitive and arrived in England to take the throne.

How did he consolidate his power?

2. Arranged for supporters to capture Elizabeth of York* who had a much stonger claim to the throne.



*Elizabeth of York was Edward IV's daughter.

How did Henry Consolidate his power?

3. Made key appointments to his council and household.



Sir Reginald Bray made Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.



Sir William Stanley made Chamberlain of the Household.


Who was William Stanley?

Henry's step-uncle who was given lots of political influence at his new title of Lord Chamerlain. He developed his Cheshire and North Wales.



Later became a traitor to Henry and was removed.

Further consolidating?

Coronation takes place on 30th October before his first meeting with parliament which was set for 7th November.



This demonstrates that his power was hereditary not because the parliament had sanctioned it.


What was the Acts of Attainder?

This declared a landowner guilty of rebelling against a monarch. The attained noble lost his title, land and sometimes his head. Done against the Yorkist nobles.
