What is located in the center of the floor of the RSD? |
A funnel shaped brass fairlead through which the RA cable passes. |
What is the purpose of the shock absorbers and where are they mounted? |
Capable of stopping the RSD and a fully loaded helo traveling at maximum speed. Mounted parallel underneath. |
What supplies power to the RSD motor? Where is it stored? |
A 19 core electric cable. Stored on an electric cable REEL located forward in the hangar. |
What is used if the RSD is unswrviceable or a visiting helo arrives? |
Portable fairlead |
Briefly explain how the arresting beam actuating system works. What's the ratio? |
Ration 2:1 Each arresting beam has a cable system routed through a sheave system and the cables are attached to hydraulic actuators. Each beam is attached to one actuator, fwd actuator moves the beam stbd while the aft one moves the port beam |
What is the purpose of the arresting beams |
Provides a means of securing the helo main probe to the RSD |
What prevents the helo from moving forward or aft while secured in the RSD |
Each arresting beam contains 12 spring loaded pins secures the helo probe |
When the arresting beams are latched together what visual indication is given |
2 bright coloured indicating flags stand up on the stbd beam and the LTCH light will illuminate on the CC |
Describe the accumulator fitted on the RSD |
Floating internal piston type. Fluid is pumped into one end of the cylinder and the piston is forced toward the opposite end of the cylinder against a captive charge of nitrogen |
List 4 purpose of the RSD accumulator |
Hydraulic shock suppression Fluid make up in a closed system Leakage compensation Emergency power in case of loss of normal power |
What indications or symptoms would you notice if there was a defective seal in the RSD accumulator? |
The presence of large amounts of oil in the air side. Nitrogen will leak into the fluid side of the accumulator. Causing a low gauge pressure and sponginess in hydraulic action |
What type of motor is used on the RSD to drive the pump |
The power supply is 208v , 3 phase, 400hz rotating at a speed of 1100 rpm when under full load |
Describe the hydraulic pump fitted on the RSD? |
an axial flow fixed displacement piston pump with a tilt head offset at 20 degrees. Pump speed 1100 rpm and discharge pressure is 3000 psi. |
Name 5 switches fitted on the RSD and what they indicate |
Beams locked switch- beams latched together Beams open switch- open and to the sides Centre lock switch- beams centered for traversing Pressure switch- hydraulic system pressure Brake light- cam breaks are off |
What is the purpose of the brake un loader valve? |
Allows the break RSD brakes to be applied rapidly |
What pressure does the system relief valve operate at and what purpose does it serve? |
3200 psi and it prevents damage to hydraulic components from over pressure |
What is used to operate the RSD arresting beams when there is no power and explain how it works? |
The solenoid valves can be operated from inside the hangar through a rope lanyard system. The arresting system can be opened and closed. |
When power is not available can the RSD be pumped up and operated? |
Yes by using a hand pump and the rope lanyard system. |
Briefly describe the construction of the a Winch hydraulic power unit? |
Located in RAST. Provides the source of power for the traversing, Recover assist and nose guide sub systems. A 50 hp electric motor drives 3 pumps |
How is oscillation and vibration of the WHPU base reduced? |
2 adjustable Tie Back brackets minimize the movement and oscillation by varying tension applied to the RA cable |
What components of the RAST are not supplied with oil from the main reservoir? |
The rope accumulator, RA gearbox, RSD and tachometer gearboxes |
What is the main purpose of the WHPU prime mover |
Provides power for 3 pumps and various motors. Failure of the prime mover renders the total system inoperable. |
What is the primary purpose of the Recovery Assist sub system |
Assists the helo in la doing safely with the main probe between the arresting beams |
What mode will the RS sub system be in when the rope accumulator sliding cylinder is fully extended |
2 feet per second mode |
At what tension will the 2 feet per second switch open and what mode will the RS system be in? |
400lbs ......revert to tension mode |
Describe the recovery assist motor? |
Axial piston, tilt head type fixed at 35 degrees |
What is the fear ratio in the RA gearbox |
3:1 |
How much cable is stored on the RS winch drum |
100 feet |
What is the purpose of the RS drum tachometer? |
When the drum turns the tachometer produces a DC output. The polarity indicates the direction of rotation. |
What safety device is fitted to stop the RA drum from spilling cable onto the deck when the cable becomes slack? |
The reel out interlock switch |
With the aid of a drawing explain the operation of the rope accumulator including the pressures you would expect to see? |
When applying ten6to the RA cable the cylinder piston will push the hydraulic fluid through the check valve into the manifold then into one of the 3 accumulators......LP pressure 34 psi......medium pressure 222.....HP 1460 psi |
List the three switches fitted to the rope accumulator |
2 feet per second switch Auto stand by switch Reel out interlock switch |
Why is the 2 feet per second switch fitted |
To protect personnel by limiting the speed of the cable |
What is the purpose of the sheave tachogenerator? |
