Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) or Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI)
infections that can be transferred from from one person to another through sexual contact; happens in young people the most
Types of STDs
bacterial; viral; and parasetic
Bacterial STDs
transferred through bodily fluids and physical contact; curable; examples are gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia
Viral STDs
transferred through bodily fluids and physical contact; non-curable (though medication can help clear up symptoms); examples are herpes simplex, HPV, hepatitis, and HIV
Parasetic STDs
transferred through physical contact; curable; examples are scabies and crabs
Abstinence
avoiding any type of sexual contact; the only 100% way to prevent STDs and pregnancy
Other Preventative Ideas
practicing safe sex (latex condoms); monogamous relationship (with uninfected person); have fewer sexual partners; have an honest discussion about sex and STDs with potential sexual partners (before you have sex); do not use intravenous drugs; avoid sex during menstruation
Chlamydia
bacterial infection causes abnormal genital discharge and pelvic inflammatory disease and can lead to infertility
Symptoms of Chlamydia
unusual vaginal discharge, pain during urination, pain during intercourse, bleeding between menstrual periods, itching, swelling of the testicles, or no symptoms at all
Treatment of Chlamydia
prescribe antibiotics which should clear up infection within a week
Gonorrhea
bacterial infection that leads to sterility and increased risk of HIV infection; during pregnancy, can lead to infant blindness, meningitis, or ectopic pregnancy; highest rates occur in girls ages 15-19 and in guys 20-24
Symptoms of Gonorrhea
often no symptoms, can cause a burning sensation while urinating, green/yellow vaginal ore penile discharge
Treatment of Gonorrhea
oral antibiotics, both partners treated at the same time to prevent passing infection back and forth
Oral Sex
is considered sexual contact; can transmit bodily fluid/blood thru oral sex; any fluid exchange can infect either partner
Syphilis
a bacterial infection usually transmitted by sexual contact
Four Stages of Syphilis
primary, secondary, latent, late
Primary Stage of Syphilis
10 days to 3 months; small sores
Chancre
small sore formed during primary stage of syphilis
Secondary Stage of Syphilis
rash, fever, fatigue
Latent Stage of Syphilis
symptoms go away for awhile
Late Stage of Syphilis
serious internal organ damage (cardiovascular/neurological)
Genital Herpes
this virus enters your body through small breaks in your skin or mucous membranes; lifelong virus that can re-occur anytime the immune system is disrupted
Symptoms of Genital Herpes
small blisters, sores that itch around the genital area (and maybe legs); occurs 2-10 days after exposure...then go away; may re-occur due to stress, nutrition, illness, medication, etc.
Herpes Simplex Type 1
the type that usually causes cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth, though it can be spread to your genital area during oral sex
Herpes Simplex Type 2
the type that commonly causes genital herpes; the virus spreads through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact
How Herpes is Contracted
sexual or skin-to-skin contact; HSV-2 is very common and highly contagious whether you have an open sore or not; outbreaks can be treated, but virus will remain in bloodstream; HSV-1 can be transmitted to genital area of male/female through open sore
Genital Warts (HPV)
small, flesh-colored bumps that may have a cauliflower-like appearance cause itching and discomfort in the genital area; caused by skin or fluid contact from an infected person; sore usually appears within 3 months; some strains of the virus have no sores; very closely linked to cervical cancer; most prevalent STD because guys may never get symptoms
Treatment of HPV
your doctor can help you clean an outbreak of warts with medications or surgical treatments (frozen/burned off); virus remains in bloodstream; cervical cancer has been closely linked to HPV infection; new vaccination available (i.e. Gardasil)
Type A Hepatitis
highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus; caused by contaminated food or water or from close contact with someone who is already infected; vaccine available
Type B Hepatitis
leading to liver failure, liver cancer, or cirrhosis; there is a vaccination against it
Cirrhosis
a condition that causes permanent scarring of the liver
Type C Hepatitis
causes liver damage/failure; most serious type of hepatitis; no vaccine available
Mandated Reporter
government/state workers that must report any incidence of child abuse that they witness or is reported to them; i.e. policeman, teacher, etc.; a family member that does NOT work for the state is NOT a mandated reporter
