Palatine Tonsils

Normally just called tonsils; found at the side of the throat opposite the back of the tongue

Describe the Different Sections of the Pharynx

Oral: the area behind the oral cavity that runs from the palatine tonsils to the back of the wall of the throat

Laryngeal: the part of the common pathway of the resiratory and digestive system from the base of the tongue to the opening of the larynx

Nasal: the part of the nasal region from the posterior end of the nasal septum down to the level of the soft palate

Vestibule

Space between the lips or cheeks and the teeth

Oral Cavity Proper

The area of the oral cavity bounded anteriorly and laterally by the teeth and posteriorly by the palatine tonsil

Labial Frenum

Fold of tissue that attaches the lip to the labial mucosa at the midline of the lips

Zygomaticoalveolar Crest

Heavy ridge of maxialla and zygomatic bone that forms a heavy supporting ridge running up from the alveolar process of the maxillary premolar-molar ridge

Diastema

Any space between teeth in the same arch

The Coronoid Process

Bony projections at the upper anterior ramus of the mandible; point of attachment for the temporal muscle

Retromolar Pad

Pad of tissue behind the mandibular third molars found in a retromolar triangle

Sebaceous Glands

Small oil producing glands that are usually connected to the hairs to lubricate them

Fordyce Granuals

Cortical Plate

Dense bone on the buccal and lingual surfaces of the alveolar bone

Exostoses

Small extra bone growth on a bone surface usually seen on the buccal cortical plate

Rugae

Small ridges of tissue extending laterally across the anterior of the hard palate

Incisive Papilla

Small, rounded, oblong mound of tissue directly behind or lingual to the maxillary central incisors and laying over the incisive foramen

Incisive Foramen

Foramen at the midline of the anterior plate region

Posterior Nasal Spine

Pointed bony projection at the posterior end of the hard palate

Fovea Palatinae

Small depressions in mucosa on either side of the posterior nasal spine, indicating the junction of the hard and soft palates

Uvula

Small hanging fold of tissue in the back of the soft palate

Levator Veli Palatini

Muscle of the soft palate that helps pulp it back against the throat wall

Posterior Pillar/Palatopharyngeal Arch or Fold

Fold of tissue behind the tonsil that contain the palatopharyngeus muscle

Anterior Pillar/Palatoglossal Arch or Fold

Fold of tissue extending down in front of the tonsil

Fauces

Space between the left and right palatine tonsils

Lingual Tonsils

Tonsil tissue in the dorsum of the posterior part of the tongue

Lingual Frenum (Frenulum)

Fold of tissue that attaches the undersurface of the tongue to the floor of the mouth

Ankyloglossia

Tongue tied: condition in which the lingual frenum is short and attached to the top of the tongue, making normal speech difficult

Sublingual Caruncle

Small elevations of soft tissue at the base of the lingual frenum that is the opening for the submandibular duct

Sublingual Fold

Fold of tissue extending backward on either side of the floor of the mouth; duct of the mandibular gland lies below it
