Chain of custody

A record documenting the identities of any personnel who handled the evidence, the date and time that contact occurred or the evidence was transferred from one person to another, and the reason for doing so.

Circumstantial evidence

Information that can be used to prove a theory based on facts that were observed firsthand.

Contaminated

The process of transferring a hazardous material from its source to people, animals, the environment or equipment, all of which may act as carriers for the material.

Demonstrative evidence

Materials used to demonstrate a theory or explain an event.

Direct evidence

Statements made by suspects, victims, and witnesses.
