What is an input device?

A hardware device used to input data into a computer for processing

Keyboard

Input device which uses labelled keys to enable data input into a computer system

Mouse

Input device that controls the movement of a pointer on the screen, based on its own movement and allows the user to select things through pressing a button

Touch screen

An input & output device. A touch sensitive surface that allows the user to select, control, or move objects by touching icons and symbols using fingers

Microphone

An input device for capturing sound

Camera

An input device to capture still or moving images

Bar code scanner

An input device which captures thin black and white lines which represent a number

RFID (Radio frequency identification) reader

An input device for reading data from RFID tags

Sensor

An input device which can detect physical conditions such as temperature, weight, light, sound etc

Eye typer

An input device for a user with limited physical mobility. A camera tracks the movement of a users eye to see which key they are looking at, a slow blink selects the key

Puff / suck switch

An input device for a user with severely limited physical mobility. It is a swicth which can be operated by blowing into or sucking a small tube

An input device for a user with limited hand use. This device is a track ball device that can be operatied with the foot.

An input device for a user with limited visibility. This keyboard has rasied embossed patterns on each key that match the standard braille characters

What is an output device?

A hardware device that is used to output data that has been processed, from a computer

Monitor

An output device that can display images (including moving images) and text

Printer

An output device that produces physical copies of output from a computer system

Speaker

An output device that outputs sound

Actuator

An output device that produces physical movement

Screen reader

A range of output devices that convert screen output into audible speach or braille

Actuator (disability)

Actuators can be used to produce movement e.g. opening doors, raising / lowering ramps for those that have limited or no movement of their own.

Voice synthesisers

Spoken output from a computer for those unable to communicate verbally (e.g. Stehen Hawking)
