CPU

Central Processing Unit. Located inside the computer and contains 3 parts: the control unit, the arithmetic logic unit, and the memory unit.

RAM

Random Access Memory. This is temporary memory that is designed to hold new data and is available only while the computer is turned on.

Read-Only Memory. This is a permanent internal memory inside the system, is inaccessible by the user, and is used to store the instructions that are installed or programmed at the manufacturer.

The smallest unit of binary information.

Peripheral devices
|
These devices are needed to 1) input the information, 2) output the information into a form that is easily read by the user, or 3) store the information for later use.

Input devices
|
These allow the input of data into the computer. Examples include: keyboards, mice, scanners, graphic tablets, microphones, and digital cameras.

Output devices
|
These devices output the data after it has been proccessed. Examples include: computer moniter, printers, speakers, and projection units.

Storage devices
|
These allow storage of data for later use. These include internal and external options, such as: hard drive, floppy disks, zip disks, compact discs, and USB mini drives.

|
Universal Serial Bus port. These ports provide an easy, universal way to connect an array of devices and provide faster transfer of information.

Ethernet Port
|
This is used for a high-speed connection to the internet or another network such as an intranet or internal network.
