1. Why is this section of Scripture called the toledot of Terah even though he dies almost at the beginning?

Terah displayed disbelief and disobedience by settling in Haran. He forfeited his part of the upcoming covenant.

2. What is the significance of the Abrahamic covenant, first for the nation of Israel and then for the Bible as a whole?

Israel: Chosen as the land of promise. Israel was to represent the land of the living God to the other nations of the world.
Bible: 1) Abraham will have a special territory. 2) Abraham is going to become a nation. 3) Abraham and offspring will be a blessing. "In you all the families of the earth will be blessed." Gen 12:3 |

3. Describe Abraham's spiritual odyssey.

Abraham had a hard time trusting God. He left the land for food when God promised to provide. He did not trust God to protect him in a foreign land, so he resorted to falsehood. Place his personal well-being ahead of his wife, allowing Pharoh to her for his harem receiving riches in appreciation. Used his wife's maidservant to bore a Ishmael.

4 & 5 Why was Lot wrong in choosing to live in Sodom and Gomorrah? Why did God destroy Sodom and Gomorrah?

Things were much worse than expected. Lot's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt. His two daughters got him drunk and slept with him to become pregnant.
The land was rotten and was ready for judgment. |

6. What was Abraham's greatest test?

To sacrifice his only son, Issac, on Mt. Moriah.

7. Why is Isaac disappointing to us?
|
With all the issues leading up to his birth, we think his only importance was being the son of Abraham and father of Jacob. Only told three things about him: 1) Servant was sent to Haran to find a wife for him 2) Also passes his wife off as his sister 3) He and Rebekah have twins that both fathered a nation.
