To test the effect of noise as a source of context on the studying and retrieval of meaningful material in an academic context.

Participants

8 members of a psychology laboratory class served as experimenters.



Experimenters recruited 5 participants each.

An article on psycho immunology


A tape with the sound of a noisy cafeteria



* care was taken to make sure the tape did not include full sentences, just the general noise of plates and chairs moving*

Questions

The article was 2 pages long



The questions consisted of 16 multiple choice and 10 short answer questions

Procedure

Instructions read aloud



Participation was voluntary



Participants were allowed to highlight and underline parts of the text



Participants in a silent condition were told they would not hear anything over the headphones
