Why did Hindenburg appoint Hitler as Chancellor?

3 primary reasons:


1.) The Nazi's were the largest party in the Reichstag (32.5% of seats) they continually forced re-election after re-election and gained more and more seats until Hitler was elected, consequently paralysing the Reichstag as no legislation was allowed to pass.




2.) The German 'elite's' desire to establish a more Authoritarian Government system and their 'healthy relations' with Hitler




3.) Preparation for co-operation with Hitler from inside the Reichstag (especially papen)

February 27th 1933 (less than a month after Hitler's appointment to Chancellorship)

What was the effect of the Reichstag being burnt down?

Hitler convinced the German people of a serious communist threat within the Nation and thereby was granted emergency powers that essentially made him a temporary dictator. With these powers Hitler would cement his own position as Chancellor, Eg:


1.) Banning all left-wing parties (those that traditionally worked against him)


2.) Declaring war on the communists

How could he pass the Enabling act and what did it do?

Hitler was able to pass the Enabling Act because he had convinced Germany and the Reichstag that the communists were attacking Germany from within and were a serious and legitimate threat to Germany, (burning down the Reichstag). As such when Hitler proposed the Enabling Act that gave him dictorial powers for 4 years he did so in the name of protecting Germany from this threat. Consequently, only the SPD voted against the legislation.

What was the Night of Long Knives?

Hitler ordered the assassination of the upper echelons of the SA (including Rohm) as he saw them as a potential threat to his regime, mainly because of their sheer numbers and the fact that he didn't have complete control over them. Once the officers were killed, the remaining SA were absorbed into the army.

In 1936. There was naturally some political unrest surrounding the event regarding the evident persecution of the Jewish population. However for the 2 weeks surrounding the event, Hitler was on his best behaviour and toned down his persecution.

Why did he take over Austria?

Because Hitler viewed Austria (his homeland) as German, and wanted to unite all German-speaking people. When Hitler marched into Austria there was largely celebration at the two nations being unified, almost no resistance of ny kind.

The Northwestern part of Czechoslovakia, which had 3 million German-speaking citizens, thusly warranting Hitler's interest.

How could Hitler just take over the country

Hitler had to make sure that France and Britain would not intervene. Thusly, he met with the British PM Chamberlain and threatened war if he did not let him occupy. Furthermore, later at the Munich Conference, Hitler convinced the British, French, and Italians to let him ceccede the Sudetenland.

Produced in Nuremberg, the Nuremberg Laws were the most significant anti-semitic laws to date. Comprised of two individual pieces of legislation

The Nuremberg Laws stripped Jews of German Citizenship and rights and made it illegal for them to marry a Aryan.
