What are contour lines? |
Symbolic horizontal lines which indicate the height and shape of a slope. |
Define landscape features. |
Physical features we can identify on the land. |
Define model. |
A smaller, realistic copy or a real object or feature. |
Define cartographer. |
A person who makes maps. |
What factors might influence a cartographer's choice of contour interval? |
•Large areas-bigger intervals •small areas-smaller intervals |
Why do cartograhers only name some of contour interval? |
To give some sort of guideline between the intervals. |
Define gradient. |
The angle of a slope compared to the horizontal. It is the steepness of a slope. |
How do you calculate gradient? |
Gradient=vertical height difference ------------------------------------ Horizontal distance |
When are is the slope steep? |
When the contour lines are close together. |
When is the slope gentle? |
When the contour lines are far apart. |
What is river valleys? |
Are lower than the surrounding area. They have a river flowing between them. |
What are spurs? |
Are pieces of land that stick out between different river valleys. |
What do the contour lines of a river valley make? |
V-shaped pattern |
What do the contour lines of spurs make? |
U-shaped pattern |
What are orthophoto image? |
A picture of the land that is made using computer technology. It is a combination of a map and vertical aerial photograph. |
Define distortions. |
Not the true shape of objects. |
What are orthophoto map? |
A rectified image based on an aerial photograph with additional information from a map. |
Define grid. |
A set of regularly spaced lines which provide a mathematical base for a drawing. |
What are vertical aerial photographs? |
Show the land taken from a camera fixed under a special aeroplane. |
What are oblique aerial photograph? |
Show the land from above but also from an angle. |
What is spot heights? |
Points marked with a dot that show the exact height of the land. |
Define topographic. |
Shape of the land. |
Define natural features. |
Parts that are naturally occurring. |
Define constructed. |
Made by people. |
What are topographic maps? |
On the scale of 1:50000 are special maps that show different features on the land. |
What are perennial rivers? |
Flows throughout the year. |
Why a row of trees and cultivated land are not natural features? |
Because a farmer planted it. |
Is a dam a natural or constructed feature?Explain. |
Constructed- it is man-made. |
Name 4 types of height clues. |
•contour lines •spot heights •trigonometric beacons •benchmarks |
What are trigonometric beacon? |
Triangular symbol showing the exact height of a place, and it's own number. |
What is a benchmark? |
A map symbol with an arrow, showing the exact height of a place, in decimal numbers. |
Define ratio. |
Compares one number to another number of the same unit. |
What is a line scale? |
A line which makes the distance on a map compared to distance on the ground. |
Define alpha-numeric grid. |
A grid with letters and numbers. |
