•many historic buildings were damaged/destroyed;


•towns and villages in the Umbria, Lazio and Marche regions suffered huge amounts of damage


•in Amatrice, over half the buildings were destroyed


•the village of Pescara de Toronto was completely destroyed


•many tourists were injured/killed because the earthquake struck during a popular festival as well as the hot summer season


•there were over 500 aftershocks that also caused great damage and hampered rescue efforts further


Secondary effects?

•many schools were destroyed or declared unsafe to be in, so more than 400 families were unable to send their children to school for a week after the earthquake occurred


•in a village near L’Aquila, the mayor delayed the start of the school year by a week because of this

Immediate responses:

•cave rescue teams had to be sent out to help, because Italy wasn't used to earthquakes and so had not many trained earthquake rescue teams


•the Italian prime minister, Matteo Renzi, declared a state of emergency and pledged €50m (£42m) in funds for rebuilding


•the Italian press criticised the government over building regulations, since historic towns didn't have to conform to anti quake building regulations

Long term responses:

•2 weeks after the earthquake, the Italian prime minister held a 10 year reconstruction project called “casa Italy ” (meaning the house of Italy)


•prosecutors investigated whether companies ignored anti seismic regulations when restoring public buildings
