I as a young woman have seen my mother disrespected due to her status as a single mother, Have been payed less than males in my first job and seen my friends called sluts by boys . Gender inequality refers to discrimination based on gender. the three points I will speak about in my speech today are sexual , financial and status inequality due to gender.Why have I chosen to speak about this today because I believe it is a issue and it is our issue.Yes us the supposedly hormonal lazy teenagers.In the words of Emma Watson if not us than who if not know then when.

1 in 4 female and 1 in 10 males are sexually assaulted in there lifetime in new Zealand and 1 in 3 woman in America and 65000 in south africa.I would not say this is a gender equality issue I men were not the large percentage of subjecting offeneders.In the us 91 percent were female and only 9 percent males were raped.Witha devastating 99 percent rapists being male.but the worst thing is that a large majority of these assault's happened in the household.We as woman cannot trust males to respect our body's when it is clear we are respecting theres.We are shown how to use a condom in year 10 yet we are taught nothing about respecting the opposite gender.How is this equal if males are treating woman as sex objects. |

I am paid 10 percent less than my male colleagues in my part time job because I was born a female .Not based on skills , exsperience or work ethic but because I was born worth10 percent less than a male.10 percent may seem small for many of us out there but yet it make a difference of 50 dollars minum wage less per week.88 percent of benefit recievers are woman yet we still have a 10 percent disadvantage.I am not saying males are only to blame as I know some people do not have goals in life or health issue.Since the 1960s it has been exspected that the males work while the mothers maintain the household and bring up the children.Yes society is more modernised but a similarity to this standard is still continueing today.I went to a catholic school were my full time working single mother was looked down upon because she was on her own.We I feel they should have been looking uo to her having 3 children and carrying a full time job. |

Ones status and rights as a man or woman. woman are expected to present themselves a certain way to not be referred to as lesbian , act girly in general ,only live up to certain expectation in area of male dominance. Ones status as a girls is to wear dresses , act a certain way and be interested in stereotypical things things.An example of that is being told you are good at something for a girl or that you are a lesbian because you don’t like to wear dresses.males are expected to not show there emotion , dress a certain way to not be referred to as gay , exceed certain expectation's in areas of supposal dominance and be interested in stereotypical male things.An example being that boys cannot hang out with girls otherwise there gay.Why have we build this standard and stereotype as males and females that we have to be within. |
