This term refers to the the continually varying nature of some values that are input into computer systems; e.g. Sound, temperature, moisture. Data in this format must be converted to digital format before it can be stored on a computer system.

Presenting similar graphic images at high speed, one after another to create the illusion of movement

An abbreviation of the term 'Application' used to describe programs designed for some mobile phones.
Auditory feedback
The provision of feedback through a speaker sysetem; often used to attract the users attention or perhaps to add an element of excitement to a gaming scenario
Backup
A copy of data which is held at a safe location and used if the original fi le becomes lost or damaged.
Bandwidth
A measurement, usually in kilobits, megabits or gigabits per second, which states the rate at which data travels along a communication line. The higher the bandwidth the qusicker the data will travel along the line.
Batch
This involves collecting data over a period of time and then processing

this data collectively at a convenient time such as night time. The batch is held as a transaction fi le and then after processing the master fi le is updated.
Bitmapped graphics
A method of storing graphic images through the storage of data relating to every component that makes up the graphic.
Blu-ray
A high capacity optical storage medium that uses a blue laser for data recording and playback.
Bluetooth
A short range wireless technology which allows devices to connect together. For example, a mobile phone and headset connect together using bluetooth.
Breadcrumb Trail
Provides users with a list of all pages visted on a website and in the order they were visited.
Broadband
A telecommunciations link that provides a wide bandwidth communication for high speed internet access
Browser
Software used to view webpages.
Casual Gaming
Games with simple rules and methods of interaction that require little practice for success. Casual games are often available as free downloads.
Character
A character is a letter, a digit, a punctuation mark, a symbol or a control code that can be stored by a computer. Each character is stored in digital format referred to as a byte.

Shortcuts that allow users to skip elements of games they are having diffi culty with
Check digit
A digit added to the beginning or end of a number to verify that the number entered is an authentic code. For example ISBNs on books have a Check Digit added to the end. The reading computer calculates the Check Digit, if it matches the Check Digit at the end og the ISBN then it is a valid ISBN
Code View
Allows a website designert to view the HTML code comprising the website they are creating. Some website designer prefer to produce websites by writing all of the HTML code themselves.
Compressed
A fi leis said to be compressed when its overall size is reduced through the application of an algorithm to remove unnecessary data
Compression
The use of an algorithm to reduce fi le size through the removal of unnecessary data
Concept Keyboard
A keyboard that can use a variety of programmed overlays. The overlays allow the keys to be defi ned as words and/or pictures.
Controls
The methods used by the user to interact with the game; methods vary from cursor keys on keyboards to specialised input devices such as steering wheels, guitars etc
Crop
A tool in a graohics package that will allow you to select part of an image and discard everyhitng else outside the selected area
Data
Unprocessed facts and fi gures which on their own have no meaning. Data is entered into a computer and processed, it then becomes information.
Data collection
Using forms and devices to collect data from a variety of sources.
Data compression
Reducing the size of a fi le by using special software such as WinZip. Compressed data has to be decompressed before it can be used.
Data Logging
Capturing data at regular intervals by a device such as a sensor. It is then stored by a computer for analysing at a later point.
Data Validation
Checking data to ensure that it is acceptable and sensible. Validation of data ensures that the data is present, of the correct type, in the correct range and of the correct length.
Data Verifi cation
Data verification is carried out to ensure that data keyed into a computer has been accurately transferred from a paper-based form. The most common way of performing verification is to key the data twice. Another method of verifi cation is proofreading. Documents once typed can be proofread to ensure that they contain correct and accurate information.
Data Decompression
The restoration of a compressed fi le to its original format for presentation using an appropriate output device
Design View
Allows a website designer to view the multimedia elements comprising the website they are creating.
Digital
Data in a format known as binary which consists of two digits: 0 and 1. These digits are known as BITs (Binary digITs).
Digital Certifi cate
An attachment to an electronic message such as an e-mail, used for security purposes. The most common use of a digital certifi cate is to verify the user sending a message and also provides the receiver with the means to encode a reply.
Digital Signature
A digital code attached to an electronic message which uniquely identifi es and authenticates the sender.
Draw Tools
A set of tools available with graphics packages to allow for the creation and editing of graphic images.
E-Commerce
This is a means of conducting business transactions over electronic networks such as on-line banking.
Electronic Mail (e-mail)
A toll for sending and receving messages electronically across a network of computers. This allows users to send messages and fi le attachments to other users on a network by using a system of electronic mailboxes. Mail that is sent is normally received immediately. To send and receive emails each user needs an email address.
Encryption
A way of encoding data before transmitting it on a network. Data is encoded by the sending computer using a software encoding key and sent along the communications line. The data can only be decoded by the receiving computer if it has the decoding key. This keeps data secure whilst it is being transmitted between computers. It is used on the Internet for credit card transactions to ensure that the user's credit card number is not detected.
Expert
This is a computer system that attempts to simulate a human expert.
Systems
This involves collecting all the knowledge from human experts in a related fi eld. This will be used to create a knowledge base which can then be queried by a human expert looking for a solution to a related problem.
External Memory
This refers to memory devices that are connected to the computer system including hard drives, DVD drives, USB memory pens and Blu-Ray discs. They will allow programs and data to be stored permanently
Facsimile (FAX)
A device which is used to transfer paperbased information along telecommunications lines. Fax capability is commonly integrated into computer systems provided a scanner is used.
Feedback
This is a situation where the output can infl uence further inputs. It is used in real time processing situations.
File
A resource for storing data or information on a computer system. The fi le usually has a name and an extension which is related to the software which created it. For example Microsoft word fi les have a .doc extension
File Server
The main computer on a network which holds applications, user data and manages the security of the network.
File updating
This involves altering existing data already written to a fi le. After updating data the fi le should contain the most recent version of data.
Fill (Flood fi ll)
A tool in a graphics package that allows a selected image component to be fi lled with the selected background colour
Flash
An multimedia application used to develop video and animation for publication on web pages. Can also be used to develop interactive multimedia applications.
Flash technologies
A non-volatile memory chip that stores data electronically.
Flip
A tool in a graphcis package that will allow a selected graphic element to be rotated 180 degrees either vertically or hosizontally
Format Check
A validation check which ensures that the data entered contains individual characters that are valid. For example a check for a date could be in the form dd/yy/mm.
Frameset
A method of creating web pages where each element of a page is created separately and then combined onscreen when displayed through the users browser
Function Key
Keys labelled with F followed by a number found along the top of a qwerty keyboard. They are programmed to carry out a user task.
Game Genre
A grouping of games of similar characteristics and game play under one name or phrase for ease of identifi cation; e.g. Action games, adventure games etc.
Game Play
The rules that defi ne how a user should interact with a computer game and the controls used to allow interaction with a computer game
Games console
An interactive electronic device that uses video signals to display a video game
Hacker
A person who gains unauthorised access to a computer system
Haptic peripherals
Peripheral devices that use small motors to provide additional sensory feedback to users. E.g. In gaming steering wheels that shudder when you go over rough terrain in the computer game scenario
Horizontal Navigation
Displaying the main navigation elements of a web page as a series of options that are displayed down one side of a web page. Normally down the left hand side of the web page
Hot Key
This is known as a shortcut. It allows the user to use two or more keys to carry out a task as an alternative to using a mouse and menu. For example ctrl+p to print.
Hotspot
An area of a large image on a web page that has a hyperlink added to it
Hyperlinks
A graphic / button / text on a website that when clicked on takes the user to another page / website /document
Information
Data which has been processed and is presented in a way which is meaningful to users.
Infrared
Used to send data between computers and other devices such as Personal Digital Assistants over short distances. Also used with remote control devices were signals are generated using Light Emiting Diodes.
Interaction
The use of input and output using peripheral devices to allow communication between a user and a computer
Interface
The software used to facilitate interaction between users and computers
Internal Memory
The is memory inside the CPU. RAM and ROM are examples of internal memory
Internet
A network of computers linked together usinga variety of communications technologies such as cables and wireless transmission. The computers and cables constitute the Internet.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
A company which provides the user with a connection to the Internet. ISPs usually give email and web space to their users. An ISP is necessary to enable connection to the Internet.
Intranet
A website which is only available to employees or members of an organisation, school or college. The website is usually stored on a fi le server which belongs to the organisation. Members can access the website from within the local area network and in some cases can log on to the website from home. Access to the website is restricted to theose people who belong to the organisation.
Layers
A tool used in website design to allow for the addition of text, images, video etc to any location on a web page
Length check
A validation check which ensures that the data entered has the correct number of characters or does not exceed a certain number of characters.
Lookup table
A list of data which can be used (or 'looked up') to provide values for other data fi elds
Magnetic Stripe
This is an integral part of a plastic card such as a credit card. On this tape data can be written and read by a magnetic stripe reader.
Master File
The main fi le to store data in a computer system. A transaction fi le is used to update a master fi le.
Memory Card
A memory card, sometimes called a fl ash memory card is a small storage medium used to store data for use on portable devices such as digital cameras.
Memory card reader
A device used to read data from portable memory cards for example from a digital camera.
Microphone
An input device used to convert analogue sound waves into digital format
Modelling
Creating a set of rules that can stimulate a real life situation done by a computer. An important design feature of modelling is the ability to carry out What..If situations and make predictions from this.
Multimedia
The combination of text, graphics, voice, video and sound to produce a presentation or a website.
Network Interface Card(NIC)
A device fi tted to a computer which enables it to connect to a network
On-Line
When two devices are connected to allow for data to be sent and received is described as on-line. For example a computer attached to a printer.
Online Gaming
Playing computer games via the internet or another network.
Operating System
A software package that manages the computer system functions including allocating software and hardware to jobs, managing memory allocation for tasks requiring processing and managing overall system security.
Optical Storage media
Any storage medium that allows for the storage and reading of data using laser technology
Optimise
The reduction of the fi le size of an image / document for Internet transmission through the removal of unnecessary data
Optimised
When fi les are compressed to facilitate storage or electronic tranmission across a communication link they are said to be optimised
Peripheral Device
A hardware component connected to a computer. These can be categorised as input devices, output devices and storage devices.
Pixel
The smallest area on a VDU that can be edited such as changing the colour. A picture is made up of pixels. The greater the amount of pixels, the higher the resolution, hence a better quality image.
Portability
The way in which users can transfer or reuse data across a range of applications.
Presence check
A validation check which ensures that data has been entered into a data fi eld.
Preview Mode
Allows a website designer to test their website to see how it will be displayed using a browser
Program
A set of instructions written in a computer based language to instruct the computer to carry out a given task.
Protocol
A set of rules which govern the way in which data is transmitted between computers networks.
Puzzle Games
A game genre where the game player is presented with a series of puzzles to solve before being able to progress through succesive game levels
Resolution
This measures the quality of an image in pixels. It is the total number of pixels displayed horizontally and vertically by a VDU. The resolution of VDUs can vary.
Role play games
A game genre where the game player is encouraged to view the sme scenario through the eyes of the characters in the game
Rotate
A tool in a graphics package that will allow for the rotation of a selected gaphic element through 360 degrees
Router
A device which connects two or more networks together. It can work out the best route for data to travel between computers. A router is used to link a local area network to the Internet. The router will receive data from the Internet, and send it on the best route along the network to the requesting computer.
Rules
The actions the game player must follow when interacting with a computer game. Rules defi ne how the user can score points/lives etc
Scanner
A device used to take copies of hardcopy documents for storage in digital format on a computer.
Scoring
A mechanism that allows the user to determine how successfull they are in thier attempts to play a computer game. Game scores are determined by the users interactions with the game and the rules of the game
Search Engine
A program which allows a user to search through the network of computers on the Interent to fi nd information. Different search engines will return different results for the same search criteria because they search different computers for the information. Examples of search engines are Google and Yahoo.
Sensor
An electronic component that coverts energy from one source to another that can be understood by a computer system.
Sensory feedback
The provision of feedback in the form of an output that will be detected by one or more of the human senses
Simulation
A computer program used to model “real life” situations and associated behaviour such as an aircraft cockpit were the model would be designed based on a variety of possible situations that pilots may experience in real world situations
Sitemap
Using one page on a web site to list all other internal and eternal hyperlinks displayed on the website
Smart Card
This is a plastic card such as a credit card which contains a microchip. Data can be written to and read from the microchip by a “chip and PIN” reader.
Social Gaming
The use of computer games to facilitate a form of socialinteraction. Gamers often compete with users they already know. These games are often simple puzzle type games and are hosted via social websites.

Storyboard
The production of diagramatic representation of scenes / pages in an application in the design stages of development.
Stretch
A tool in a graphics package that will allow a selected graphic element to be stretched in a given direction by clicking on the edge of the image and dragging in the required direction.
Stylus
A stylus resembles a pencil in appearance and is used to allow the user to input data in “freehand mode” using a graphics digitiser.
Tabs
Categorising user options as tabs on a web page. When a user clicks on a tab more options are provided
Target audience
A description of the audience the game is aimed at. Used to help determine appropriate level of language, graphics etc at the game design stage
Telepresence
This is used in medicine to describe a situation of creating a “virtual patient” which can then be used by surgeons to practice for a forthcoming operation.
Teleworking
Use of ICT resources to work from home.
Thumbnail
A reduced version of a larger image displayed on a web page which provides the user with a preview of the image. When the user clicks on the reduced image a full size version of the image will be displayed
Tool palette
A group of icons on a graphics package that provides shortcuts to the most commonly used editing tools.
Transaction File
This involves storing data that will be used to update the master fi le at a later stage.
Transcription Error
An error created when transferring data from one source to another source. Typically keying in data from a source document to a word processor package.
Type check
A validation check which ensures that data entered is of the correct data type e.g numeric, character
Upload
To transfer digital data from one computer to another
User Interface
A system that allows users to interact with a computer system. It provides a means of allowing users to input data and instructions and the computer to communicate or output results. GUI is a commonly used interface.
