What are the responsibilities of all Aviation Instructors?

1. Helping students learn
2. Providing adequate instruction
3. Demanding adequate standards of performance
4. Emphasizing the positive
5. Ensuring aviation safety

How can instructors help students learn?

* Make learning enjoyable
* Hold students to high standards so they can gain the satisfaction of achieving them
* Make learning interesting

What are some ways to ensure you provide (more than) adequate instruction for your students?

* Tailor the lessons to their level of knowledge, way of thinking, personality, and ability
* Carefully analyze student and their performance to produce desired results
* Provide smaller, attainable goals to struggling students to boost confidence
* Raise standards for fast learners to keep them challenged, ensure they learn how to correct errors

What standards of performance should instructors use to judge their students?

* The PTS for the rating sought
* PTS maneuver standards for flight reviews

Keep in mind, PTS is a testing document, not a teaching document.

What are ways an instructor can emphasize the positive?

* Find ways to foster students' positive image of aviation
* Take care to avoid "there I was" war stories that unnecessarily frighten students or demean other pilots
* Avoid overwhelming students with info they are not prepared to digest
* Remember positive attitude results in positive learning

What are some ways to minimize student frustrations?

* Motivate students- better to want to learn than be forced to
* Keep students informed- what's expected? What's coming up next? How are they progressing?
* Approach students as individuals
* Give credit when due- praise good performance
* Criticize constructively- identify mistakes and give specific suggestions to correct them
* Be consistent
* Admit errors or that you don't know something.

What are Flight Instructors' Responsibilities?

1. Evaluation of student piloting ability
2. Pilot supervision
3. Practical test recommendations
4. Flight instructor endorsements
5. Additional training and endorsements
6. Pilot proficiency
7. See and avoid responsibility
8. Student's pre-solo flight thought process

When should CFI introduce PTS minimums into instruction

Best during the "three hours of preparation" for the check ride

How can an instructor deal with physiological obstacles students face?

* Prepare them for the sensations of flight they may not expect- noise, vibration, g-forces, etc.- in advance.
* Explain causes of turbulence so they are not overly fearful of it
* Do not ridicule them for airsickness or feelings of discomfort

What are the skills required before a student can solo?

1. Takeoffs and landings
2. Proper navigation skills
3. Proficiency in flight
4. Proper radio procedures and communication skills
5. Traffic pattern operations
6. How to ask for assistance from ATC

What are special emphasis items?

Special Emphasis Items are listed in each PTS, and are items the FAA determined to be of concern sufficient to justify additional focus.

Give examples of Special Emphasis Items

1. Positive aircraft control
2. Procedures for positive exchange of flight controls
3. Stall and spin awareness
4. Collision avoidance
5. Wake turbulence and low-level wind turbulence and wind shear avoidance
6. Runway incursion avoidance
7. CFIT
8. Aeronautical Decision Making / Risk Management
9. Checklist usage
10. Spatial disorientation
11. TFRs
12. Special use airspace (SUA)
13. Aviation security
14. Wire strike avoidance

What is Demonstrated Ability as it relates to evaluation of student ability?

Is based upon established standards of performance, suitably modified to apply to the student's experience and stage of development as a pilot

When should an instructor inform a student of their progress? How?

* Students should be provided feedback on their progress as soon as practical after a maneuver or lesson
* Can be in flight, in class, or a post-flight critique
* Be specific, and offer suggestions for improving performance

How should students' errors be corrected?

* If safety permits, allow the student to continue with the maneuver and find their own way out of their error
* Provide feedback on where things went wrong and suggestions for improvement, then have them try again
* Remember students may perform a procedure or maneuver correctly without fully understanding it. Varying it slightly so it still incorporates key parts may help them put it together.

What are a CFI's responsibilities with respect to Knowledge Tests?

* Ensure students know material prior to test
* Provide them with an endorsement
* Remember CFI is held accountable for deficiencies.
* CFI must instruct students in areas they did not demonstrate adequate knowledge in and provide endorsement stating additional training/review was provided

What are a CFI's responsibilities with respect to Practical Tests?

* Ensure students can thoroughly demonstrate level of knowledge required to successfully complete test
* Endorse logbook (see AC 61-65) and FAA Form 8710-1 for flight proficiency and completion of pre-requisites (good for 60 days)

What are some ways CFI can continue their education / professional development?

* Seek out opportunities to enhance piloting and teaching skills
* Use government resources (FAA Safety Seminars, publications, Pilot Proficiency Awards Program)
* Obtain Gold Seal Flight Instructor Certficate (See AC 61-65 Certification:Pilots and Flight and Ground Instructors)
* FAA approved sponsors Flight Instructor Refresher Clinics
* Educational / Training Institutions
* Commercial organizations
* Industry organizations

What sources of material must a CFI keep current?

* Flight publications
* PTS
* FAR/AIM
* Current certification and rating requirements. Use AC 00.2-15 Advisory Circular checklist
