What are Blocks of Learning?

  • Groups of skills and/or concepts that fit together toward achieving learning objectives
  • Should be consistent in scope
  • Completion gives the student a boost of confidence

What does a Training Syllabus do?

  • Provides instructors with a practical guide to make sure training is accomplished in a logical sequence and all requirements are met and documented.
  • Formats vary but should be in form of abstract, digest, or outline form with lesson-by-lesson coverage
  • Should stress well-defined objectives and standards

How can CFIs make good use of a Training Syllabus?

  • Be flexible (substitute ground lesson when a/c availability or wx precludes flight) but be sure changing lesson order does not impair overall logic and structure of plan
  • Emphasize items that are known to cause accidents
  • Use as checklist to document all required training provided
  • Aids in development of lesson plans

Why should instructors use lesson plans?

  • Ensures students receive best possible instruction under existing conditions
  • Assures wise selection of material
  • Eliminates unimportant details
  • Make certain due consideration given to all parts of the lesson
  • Aid instructor in presenting material in a suitable sequence for efficient learning
  • Provide an outline of the teaching procedure to be used
  • Serve as a means of relating the lesson to the objectives of the course of training
  • Give inexperienced instructor confidence
  • Promote uniformity of instruction regardless of which CFI conducts it

What are the characteristics of a well-planned lesson?

  • Unity- plan sticks to meeting the stated lesson objectives
  • Content- each lesson contains new material that relates to previously learned material
  • Scope- not too much or too little material
  • Practicality- considers conditions under which the lesson will be given
  • Flexibility- can be tailored to meet needs of students identified during course of lesson
  • Relation to Course of Training- lesson objectives align with overall course objectives, and those objectives are clear to the student
  • Instructional Steps- every lesson falls logically into the four steps of the teaching process: preparation, presentation, application, review & evaluation

What are some considerations in properly using lesson plans?

  • Be familiar with the plan
  • Adapt the lesson plan to the class or student
  • Revise the lesson plan periodically

What should be included in the lesson plan format?

At a minimum:

  1. Objectives
  2. Content to support the Objectives
  3. Completion Standards

Should try whenever possible to include elements of SBT to enhance learning

What are the duties, responsibilities, and authority of CFIs?

  1. Orient new learners to the SBT approach
  2. Help the learner become a confident planner and a critical evaluator of his own performance
  3. Help the learner understand the knowledge requirements present in real world applications
  4. Diagnose learning difficulties and help the individual overcome them
  5. Evaluate student progress and maintain appropriate documentation
  6. Provide continuous review of student learning

What is the overall objective of SBT aviation training?

  • Prepare the student to exercise sound judgment and make good decisions

What are the steps to planning a flight SBT training session?

  • Scenario destination(s)
  • Desired student learning outcomes
  • Desired level of student performance
  • Possible inflight scenario changes

What are the steps to planning a non-flight SBT training session?

  • Narrative of the task goal
  • Desired student learning outcomes
  • Desired level of student performance
  • Possible scenario changes
