What are two types of recovery in brain?
“Recovery”
• Redundant circuits “unmasked”: circuits that aren’t used a lot can be used in place of the ones that were damaged • Compensation (alternate cortical circuits formed, or new behavioral strategies formed to compensate for the damaged area) |
What happens in rats after a stroke?
* Some areas respond to both forelimb and hindlimb (not normal),
lost specificity, some areas are silent (severely damaged) |
Four methods for investigating impairments after stroke (in rodents)
• Adhesive removal task: sticker on paw
• Ladder walking task: stroked rat will have foot slips • Cylinder task: stroked rat will favor limb that is injured • Skilled reaching: rat must use 1 forepaw to reach for sugar pellet, |

Factors contributing to plasticity after brain injury
Factors contributing to plasticity after brain injury
• Location and type of injury • Age (children have a higher rate of plasticity than older adults) • Environment (enriched environment w/ more stimulation = better for plasticity) • Rehabilitation |
