conscious

- info a clt is paying attn to at any given time
-sensations due to thoughts, emotions, memories

preconscious

- info outside of clt's consciousness but readily available if needed
-operates according to reality principle

unconscious

- thoughts, feelings, desires and memories that clt has no awareness of but influence life
- can be repressed fantasies & experiences from childhood and adolescence

id

- instant gratification
- source of all motives, instincts, & energy
- biological urges, ie. impulses for survival, sex, & aggression
- unconscious; guided by pleasure principle of achieving pleasure and avoiding pain

ego

- rational, reality-oriented
- delayed gratification
- operates based on reality principle gratification of impulses must be delayed to meet real world's demands
- stops id from gratifying its impulses in socially unacceptable ways

egosyntonic

- behaviors "in sync" with ego
- no guilt: clt is comfortable with their behavior

egodystonic

- behaviors not in sync with ego
- clt feels guilt and is bothered by their behavior

ego strength

- when ego effectively deals with demands of id, superego, and reality
- maintains emotional stability and coping with stresses
- ie. someone with too little ego strength feels torn between competing demands. someone with too much can be too rigid and unyielding.

sugerego

- sense of moral standards learned from parents and society
- forces ego to conform to reality and its ideals of morality, thus causing clts to feel guilty when going against societal rules
