Anagen Phase
The initial growth phase during which the hair follicle actively produces hair
Catagen Phase
A transition stage between the Anagen and Telogen phases of hair growth
Coronal
Crown-Like; found in hairs of very fine diameter and resembles a stack of paper cups (found in small rodents & bats)
Cortex
The main body of the hair shaft; Contains the pigment granules that impart color to hair
Cortical Fusi
Little sacs of air
Cuticle
The scale structure covering the exterior of the hair
Eumelanin
Responsible for black and brown color
Follicular Tag
A translucent piece of tissue surrounding the hair’s shaft near the root. It contains the richest source of DNA associated with hair
Hair Follicle
Hair is an appendage of the skin, growing out of an organ
Imbricate
Flattened scale type of overlapping scales with narrow margin- commonly found in human hairs but many animal hairs
Keratin
Tough protein polymer made up of about 20 different amino acids
Keratinized
The scales form from specialized cells that have hardened and flattened in progressing from the follicle
Medulla
The central canal running through many hairs
Medullary Index
Measures the diameter of the medulla relative to the diameter of the hair shaft and is normally expressed as a fraction
Melanin
any of a class of insoluble pigments, found in all forms of animal life, that account for the dark color of skin, hair, fur, scales, feathers, etc.
Metabolites
idk
Mitochondrial DNA
DNA present in small structures (mitochondria) outside the nucleus of a cell. Mitochondria supply energy to the cell. This form of DNA is inherited maternally (from the mother)
Nuclear DNA
DNA present within the nucleus of a cell. This form of DNA is inherited from both parents
Phaeomelanin
Responsible for red shades
Polymers
A substance composed of a large number of atoms. These atoms are usually arranged in repeating units or monomers
Root
grows at about 1cm per month; three stages (Anagen, Catagen, & Telogen)
Spinous
Petal-Like scales are triangular in shape & protrude from hair—fur hairs of seals & bats
Telogen Phase
The final growth phase in which hair naturally falls out of the skin
Undulation
One of a series of wavelike bends, curves, or elevations
