What is the most heavily abuse drug in Western countries

Ethyl alcohol

Objective of forensic toxicology

To detect and isolate drugs in the body so that their influence on human behaviour can be determined

Metabolism

The transformation of a chemical in the body to another chemical to facilitate it’s elimination from the body

Metabolism of alcohol

Three steps: absorption, distribution, Elimination

Absorption of alcohol

Alcohol enters the bloodstream and is carried all parts of the body. After this alcohol is distributed uniformly throughout watery portions of the body about 2/3 of the bodies volume.

What factors determine the rate at which alcohol is absorbancy into the bloodstream?

Total time taken to consume the drink, alcohol content of the beverage, amount consumed, quantity and type of food present in the stomach. This is why it is difficult to predict absorption process

Eliminatiob

Happens through oxidation and excretion. Oxidation takes place in liver. Alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme converts Alocohol to acetyldehyde and then to acetic acid. This is oxidized and becomes carbon dioxide and water. Then it is excreted through the urine

Breathalyzer

Borkenstein

Modern breath testers have infrared light absorption devices and fuel cell detectors (chemicals produce electricity)
