What is the iris?
The colored ring of muscle surrounding the pupil of the eye
What is the cornea?
A transparent tissue covering the iris and the pupil
What is the pupil?
The dark, transparent region in the center of the eye where light enters
What is the sclera?
An opaque tissue surrounding the cornea; visible as the white part of the eye surrounding the iris
What is the retina?
The inner lining of the back of the eye containing light sensitive rods and cones that convert light images into electrical signals for interpretation by the brain
What is the optic nerve?
The nerve that connects the eye to the brain
Which part of the eye does the most focusing?
The cornea and the lens
What is a blind spot?
Place on the retina where the optic nerve is attached and which cannot detect light because of its absence of both rod and cone cells
What are rod cells?
Cylinder shaped cells, located in the retina, that absorb light; they allow us to see images in shades of light and dark when the light is dim
What are cone cells?
Cone-shaped cells located in the retina that absorb light; they allow us to see color in bright light
What is near-sighted?
A focusing problem in which nearby objects are clear but distant objects are blurred; the rays converge before it hits the retina
What is far-sighted?
A focusing problem in which distant objects are clear but nearby objects are blurred; the rays converge after it hits the retina
What do near-sighted people do to correct their vision and how does it help?
They use a concave lens (in their glasses) to diverge the rays
What do far-sighted people do to correct their vision and how does it help?
They use a convex lens (in their glasses) to converge the rays
What is astigmatism?
Blurred vision caused by an irregularly shaped cornea
What is internal reflection?
Where no light escapes; all light is reflected back into it (optical fiber)
What are optic fibers?
Transparent glass fibers that can transmit light from one place to another
What does laser stand for?
Light amplification by stimulated emission radiation
